Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Montazels Town Hall.

(S/E) Take Rue du Griffoul and at the end turn left onto Rue du Caire. After 70 metres, at the fork, turn right onto Chemin de la Fontveille at the sign prohibiting vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.
Continue for another 70 metres up the slightly sloping street to see the start of the trail on your right, a concrete slope with a signpost at the trailhead.

(1) Wind your way above the houses to pass a boundary stone (marking the death of a person). Take the paths on the left. Walk along the dry stone walls built by our ancestors to enhance this mountain. Reach the track by following the markings carefully.

(2) Take it, turning left at the start, pass a small quarry and continue climbing. Enjoy the beautiful drystone shelter on your left in the big bend.

(3) Continue on the left under the drystone shelter to enter the grove and walk along the bottom of the mountain for 500 metres.
Turn right after another drystone shelter in the embankment onto another path coming from Antugnac. Continue climbing to reach the summit of Montsec, marked by a geodetic marker indicating the highest point and a gas pipeline marker (yellow). Do not go straight ahead, but turn right at the summit.

(4) Begin the descent on a wide track with beautiful views of the Aude valley. On the less steep part of the track, in a bend, you will reach a crossroads with a path on the right and the track that leads to the large drystone shelter seen on the way up.

(5) Take it on the left to return to the village along the valley and discover some beautiful drystone shelters.
Follow the markings
The route ends in front of the pond known locally as "le Griffoul". You will then reach the car park where you started (S/E).

If you download the GPX track, it will be easier because since this route was posted online, the association has opened many new trails that all lead to the village, allowing you to discover new drystone shelters.

Notes

Water point at the start against the church wall. No water along the route.

Shelter in the drystone shelters.
Please note: do not attempt this route in the middle of the afternoon in summer when temperatures are high.

Worth a visit

View of the Pyrenees mountain range from the summit.
From the summit, you can see the Pic de Bugarach on your left and the village of Rennes-le-Château and its history of the priest.
The housekeeper of the priest of Rennes-le-Château (Abbé Saunière) was a native of Montazels, from the Dénarnaud family.
You will come across dry stone shelters, known as capitelles, which have been cleared of vegetation to restore them to their former glory.

Superb hike, beautiful views of the Hautes Corbières (Bugarach, Rennes le Chateau, Coustaussa), the edge of the Sault plateau above Quillan, the Madres massif, the Roc Blanc, and Saint Barthelemy to the west.
The climb up Mont Sec is a little steep, but there is a lovely view of the Haut Razes towards Antugnac and Lasserpan, and the Pic de Brau. On the way back, the path is lined with beautiful drystone shelters that are well maintained by the village's heritage association. Congratulations!

A pleasant walk. Admirable biodiversity. Magnificent landscapes. Fragrances, birdsong. Let's hope this path doesn't become too busy
Thank you to those who marked it out so well and to the person who described it. And to those who maintain this place.

A beautiful hike with stunning views of the Aude valley on one side and snow-capped peaks on the other... a variation with an interpretive trail about drystone shelters is very interesting.

This hike is very beautiful, moderately difficult but with magnificent scenery, and you pass through a small forest where the village children have hung all kinds of mobiles. It's really nice!
However, the start of the walk is not well marked (on the description), so we ended up going in the wrong direction and got a bit lost... But with an IGN map in hand, we made it back safely!

A nice little afternoon hike when you don't have much time. Beautiful views and, above all, very beautiful drystone shelters. For lovers of stone shelters.

Hello everyone,

I couldn't find Rue du Caire, which is where the hike starts.
Halfway through the hike, I realised I had taken it the wrong way round. This allowed me to find the street and see that the name of the street was not indicated from the town hall square, the recommended place to park your car.
To find the start of this hike, from the town hall square (with the Griffouls fountain), take Rue du Griffoul (to the right), then the first left (Rue du Caire).
The hike continues along this street (Chemin de Montsec).
Despite this, the walk is pleasant and offers views of numerous stone walls and beautiful drystone shelters.
