Description of the walk

Park in the car park opposite the town hall.

(S/E) As you leave the car park, take the road on the right (Chemin des Fangalots).

(1) Once at the top of the hill, follow the path opposite, heading towards the “Ruines du château de Blanchefort”. The path winds through the woodland and reaches a junction.

(2) Turn left towards La Cabanasse; the path continues to climb through the woodland, with some sections requiring care. You will emerge onto a tarmac road at the Col de Vioulas.

(3) Follow it to the left. At the wooden gate, continue straight on along the road; the old path no longer exists.

(4) Pass a path on the left signposted "Pierres Tremblantes": do not take it and continue to the next junction.

(5) Take the path on the right, following the sign for "Coume Sourde". The path climbs through the forest and leads out onto a plateau. Go straight on at the crossroads and continue along the path until you reach the junction with a road at a place called Coume Sourde.

(6) Turn left and walk along this road for about 1 km until you reach a three-way junction.

(7) Turn left onto the forest road which winds through the woods and further on crosses the Ruisseau de Valdieu.

(8) Take the small path on the right towards the Hermitage and join the D14. Turn left onto this road and continue to the junction with a tarmac road on the left.

(9) If it’s time for a break, turn right and head for a ford on the Blanque (route choice).

(10) Head back to the D14.

(9) Cross over and join the tarmac road you spotted earlier on the opposite side. Ignore the abandoned forest track on your left and continue to the junction you passed on the way out.

(5) Keep to the right and reach the start of the Pierres Tremblantes trail.

(4) Turn right, walk for about 250 m, then turn right to reach the site.

(11) Retrace your steps and continue the route by turning right. You will reach the Fauteuil du Diable and the iron-rich spring.

(12) Continue the descent towards Rennes-les-Bains and rejoin the D14. Turn left and follow the road carefully until you reach the town hall. Turn left then right to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

If you are setting off alone, let a friend or family member know your route and how long you expect to be away.
Walking shoes, walking poles, GPS, map of the hike with the route.
Bring plenty of water and snacks: dried fruit, cereal bars, etc.
Depending on the season: hat, gloves, warm clothing, cap, sunglasses, sun cream.

No water available along the route.

Worth a visit

In autumn, the colours in the forest are magnificent and it’s a great spot for mushroom and chestnut enthusiasts.
Visit the village of Rennes-le-Château, with its mysteries, the Château d’Arques, and the Gorges de Galamus.
The hike on the Bugarach.

Lovely little hike, thanks to @jean9266 for taking the time to post it online so others can enjoy it too.
Most of the route is in the shade, which is rather pleasant when it's hot. Beautiful view of Pech de Bugarach.
There's a bit too much road for my liking, but perhaps there are no other options for a hike longer than 10 km?
After reading @Lableue's comment and to avoid 100 m of tarmac elevation gain, after point 10, we crossed the Blanque and followed the "sentier insolite" (very well marked) a little higher up (100 m) on the left, which runs alongside the Blanque to Rennes-les-Bains. It's a very pleasant forest trail.
So, go and see the Devil's Chair at point 4
Total 11 km and 3½ hours with breaks.

We did this route, but changed the end.
The ground was soggy from the recent rain, so there was a lot of slush, which was slippery.
There were sections on the road, which were actually quite welcome.
In my opinion, this walk is much more pleasant in summer, as it’s in the woods.
After our break by the Blanque, we followed the path running alongside the river as far as Rennes-les-Bains, as the climb back up to the marked trail is a tarmac road.
It took us just over three hours, not including breaks.

A pleasant walk, though nothing out of the ordinary; a mostly shaded route

Hello,

Our first hike organised through you.
It was a lovely day on 19 November; as beginners, we followed the markings, using your map as a guide.
We didn’t see the Devil’s Chair or the Shaking Stones.
But we’ll be trying another hike available on your website.
Thank you very much.
Claire
