Enval Gorges via the Apage Trail

In Enval, the playful Ambène stream rises in the chestnut groves and offers dazzling views of the Château de Tournoël and the Chaîne des Puys in the distance. This site is classified as a natural area of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest. This hike can be done in hot weather as it is very shaded.

Description of the walk

From Riom, head towards Mozac, then towards Enval on the D455 and then the D138. On leaving Enval, head towards Châtel-Guyon on the D15 and continue until you reach the car park 300 metres further on, on the left.

(S/E) Follow the road on the right (towards Volvic) behind the safety barrier. At the end of the barrier, go up the path on the right.

(1) Turn right under the "Sentier de l'APAGE" archway. Climb the path under the chestnut trees. Take the wooden footbridge and continue on the other side of the stream.

(2) Pass the orientation table and continue along the path to reach the rest area, then follow the Ambène stream.

(3) Take the bridge and continue left along the stream. You will come out onto the Beauvaleix road.

(4) Follow it to the left. After 50 m, turn right under the archway onto the Sentier des Cascades. Climb up into the woods.

(5) Descend and cross the Ambène again on the bridge. Make a round trip to the Grand Gornand waterfall, then continue along the stream.

(6) At the Petit Gornand waterfall, climb up the stairs on the left for 50 m and take the path on the left. Ford the stream and climb the steps (steep slope). Follow the cliff and then climb up the path on the left. Follow the stony path (Facemeunier-Beauvaleix).

(7) Turn right onto the Sentier du Renard.

(8) Go down the stony path (view of the Château de Tournoël). Keep left until you return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The trail is fairly busy until the Petit Gornand waterfall (6), then very quiet for the second half of the route. This hike can also be done as a round trip to the point (6) to fully enjoy the gorges and avoid the steeper section on the waterfall trail just after the Petit Gornand waterfall.

Blue markings (and yellow arrow with "APAGE" written in blue). The trail is marked and managed by the association for the development of the Enval Gorges (APAGE).

Free parking.

In summer, the stream is almost dry and you will probably not be able to see the waterfalls due to lack of water.

Avoid after rain or snow: risk of slipping.

There aren't many people around in winter and the routes are really nice, but they're not suitable for children because there are some steep steps, high elevations and single track sections.
Otherwise, the course is great!

This is the best season to enjoy this hike, with lots of undergrowth for colours, chestnuts and plenty of water
to fully enjoy the waterfalls.

A 50% uphill walk through the woods along a stream. The waterfall could be nice if the water level is high enough. The descent, however, is much prettier, with a beautiful view of Tournoël Castle.
