Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Gorges d'Enval visitor centre.

(S/E) Please note at the start: the beginning is a bit technical, and there may be a lot of water depending on the season, so there are two possible starting points:
- take the APAGE path on the left, reach the junction at point 13, turn onto thefirst path on the right to reach the path junction after the waterfall.
- take the wooden bridge (this is the route shown on the map) on the right and follow the path to the large waterfall. Climb up to the right of the waterfall and continue uphill to the scree, then head left and cross the stream to rejoin the APAGE path.

(1) Follow the path running alongside the stream to the right. Cross the bridge and continue left along the stream. You will come out onto the Beauvaleix road; turn left.
Turn right under the Sentier des Cascades archway. Follow it through the woods. Cross the bridge and continue along the stream. You will reach the Petit Gornand waterfall.

(2) Climb the steps to the left of the waterfall. Take the path on the left at the junction with the path leading to Facemeunier. Ford the stream and climb the steps. Follow the cliff face, then head back up the path on the left. Turn right onto the Sentier du Renard. Continue through the woods until you reach a crossroads in a large clearing, where there is a farm.

(3) Continue straight ahead along this wide path and, about a hundred metres further on, you will come to a four-way crossroads.

(4) Turn right at a 90° angle and begin an easy descent with a few hairpin bends to reach a crossroads above the village of Crouzol.

(5) Stay on the path on the right and continue the descent to reach a stone bridge.

(6) Cross the bridge, walk alongside the stream at a distance, then fords it and reach Tournoël Castle.

(7) Then turn right onto theGR®441, marked in red and white. Walk slightly uphill to reach the statue of Notre-Dame de la Garde above Volvic.

(8) Take the middle path and head down to the water reservoir. At the reservoir, follow the road to the left then to the right. At the junction, turn right towards the Grotte de la Pierre de Volvic.
At the Volvic Organic Resort car park, take the path on the right. After crossing the Chemin de Viallard, head towards the Goulet car park through the woods.

(9) Turn right as you leave the car park; this is still theGR®441. Follow it for a few hundred metres until you reach a crossroads of paths.

(10) Leave theGR® here and turn 90° right onto the path. Stay on this path, ignoring the branches off to the right and then to the left. Following a double circular loop to the right and then left, cross a stream and emerge onto a tarmac road.

(11) Cross the road and begin an easy climb beneath the Puy de la Bannière. Join theGR®441once again.

(12) Follow it to the right for about a hundred metres, then leave it to take a path on the left. Go downhill, cross a stream, then go back uphill and continue, ignoring the various paths branching off to the right and left. At the edge of the woods, you’ll reach the crossroads in the clearing you passed on the way out.

(3) Turn right until you reach the next crossroads, which you also passed on the way out.

(4) Take the wide path on the left and walk through the village of Beauvaleix. Turn right onto Rue Ham de Beauvaleix. Continue into the forest along the path that follows it to reach the junction with the APAGE trail.

(13) Take thesecond path on the left to easily return to the Gorges d'Enval car park (S/E).

I can confirm that the route down the right-hand side along the Embene is only suitable for experienced mountaineers and small groups; I took this route on 23 March 2026, when there was a lot of water!!!

Completed on 24 May in fine weather. We wanted to go through the gorges from the start to point 1. There are no markings, and for good reason – you mustn’t be afraid of scrambling and climbing over rocks, or crossing the stream at the risk of slipping. That said, we loved pushing ourselves 😉. The second option is highly recommended for those who don’t want to take such risks.
Otherwise, a very beautiful hike, ideal in hot weather.

After several attempts to set off on this hike, the route along the stream quickly turned into a climb. Not wanting to put my group of hikers at risk, I abandoned this route in favour of the APAGE municipal route, which is very well signposted and safe (and starts from the same car park)

We didn't have a clue where to start on the right... we tried a few different paths before finally turning back and starting again on the left...
A total of 18.5 km in 6 hours... a decent climb at the end just to really finish us off 🤭😊

A lovely walk with some beautiful views. The only slight downside was that we did it without a GPS track and found ourselves a bit lost at times. The start is quite steep and might be tricky in certain conditions. No problems, however, on 1 October (a lovely, dry day).

A really lovely hike. I’d recommend following the Apage trail at the start of the hike; the section along the stream quickly turns into a climb and there’s a risk of rockfalls. The rest of the route is brilliant. A 17km route with 650m of elevation gain according to my GPS watch, completed in 5 hours including breaks. Thanks for this route.

A lovely hike; the start along the bed of the Embène is great fun, though it’s probably not accessible all year round. The route is well marked; we couldn’t really judge the signposting as we were following the route on the app using GPS.
The climb up the western slope of Puy de la Bannière between 11 and 12 isn’t the most pleasant in the blazing sun, but there aren’t really any alternatives. We completed the hike in 5 hours, including photo stops and a lunch break, but didn’t visit the castle, which seems to be open at irregular intervals (every hour?). Water point at the Volvic spring (around 9am), but obviously no spring water
Thanks for sharing.
