Ghajn Tuffieha and Gnejna Bay

This hike on the north-west coast of Malta offers the chance to discover two beautiful beaches that are uncrowded in the low season. The route begins with a walk inland through cultivated plots of land, on narrow roads lined with dry stone walls where flowers abound in spring. It continues along the sea and passes two sandy beaches, Ghejna Bay and Gahjn Tuffieha, before ending at the fortified tower that guards Golden Bay.

Description of the walk

Follow the road towards Ghawdex (Gozo). At San Pawl Il-Bahar, at the first roundabout, take the first exit on the left, following the signs for "Il-Manikata - Ghajn Tuffieha - Golden Bay". Continue straight ahead to the car park at the end of the road with the fortified tower in front of you.

(S/E) Return to the car park entrance and take the wide path on the right at the foot of a large information board about the site (green metal barrier). Ignore the board, walk a few metres and then turn right onto a stony path that climbs steeply. The start of this path is obvious but may be hidden by parked cars.

Pass between two unfinished buildings and continue to a crossroads. Continue straight ahead to descend into a small valley planted with pine trees and reach a flat area where several paths intersect.

(1) Turn slightly left to climb towards the rocky ridge. When you reach the intersection with another very rough path, continue straight ahead to come out onto the plateau and reach a low dry stone wall (RTO sign - private property - on the ground).

Do not cross it, but turn right at a 90° angle to follow it. At the next crossroads, turn left onto a wider track. Further on, go around a metal barrier preventing access to cars and continue to a new intersection where you will find the tarmac road again.

(2) Turn right, pass two houses and continue straight ahead, ignoring all the paths on either side. Descend gently to the junction with the road leading to Gnejna Bay (Triq il-Gnejna).

(3) Cross very carefully (no pedestrian crossing) and take the road opposite. This road narrows after a few hundred metres and runs between two dry stone walls that hide oncoming vehicles. Proceed with caution. At a left-hand bend (Ta' l-Iskurvit on the map), pass house No. 14 on your right and continue for about 60 metres.

(4) Turn right onto a double-track farm road. Keep left at the fork immediately after to drive through cultivated fields and come out onto a small paved road at a bend.

Go straight ahead, slightly to the left; ignore a path on the right and cross a group of greenhouses (some in poor condition) before reaching a crossroads. Turn right and continue straight ahead along the narrow road lined with walls (caution) until you reach the viewpoint over the bay and cliffs of Fomm ir-Rih.

(5) Continue along the road on the right. Ignore a path on the right leading to a few buildings, pass a shrine on the left and you will reach a chain blocking access to motor vehicles. Ignore the path on the left (private property), go around the chain and continue along the wide path that follows the road to reach the edge of the cliff.

(6) Don't miss the narrow path on the right that leads down to Ghejna Bay (metal protection on the first few metres). After a chain across the path, the path turns 90° to the right and heads straight down the slope. A few very steep and slippery sections, some of which are eroded, require caution before reaching the beach.

Cross the beach, pass a few food and drink kiosks along the car park and continue straight ahead on the small concrete quay. Continue at the foot of the cliff on large rock slabs (there are numerous signs warning of falling rocks).

(7) Turn right to climb a few steps carved into the rock, then continue along the narrow ledge path that passes a few buildings below and leads to a fork at the foot of the main difficulty of the hike (not shown on the map).

(8) On the right, there is a very steep track (30° slope) and, on the left, a flatter, more accessible path. Take the latter
which soon becomes very steep again, crossing a strange area of unstable, crusty ground caused by the combined effects of the wind and sea air. This path turns right at a 90° angle, then slopes to the left before reaching a small pass overlooking the beautiful beach of Ghajn Tuffieha.

(9) From here, there are many possible routes. Simply choose the path you feel most comfortable with, heading left towards the base of the rocky promontory that closes the bay to the south. The recorded route is just one of many possibilities.

When you reach a small pass with a beautiful view of the two bays, turn right to reach the beach. Here again, there are several possible paths.

Once on the sand, head towards the base of the clearly visible steps. Climb these to reach the car park where you started.

(S/E) Cross the car park and continue along the wide stony path that leads to the fortified tower. If you venture to the edge of the cliff (be careful), you can enjoy a beautiful view of the nearby Golden Bay beach. Turn back and return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

There are no water sources along the route, but there are plenty of places to eat and drink in Ghejna Bay, Ghajn Tuffieha and Golden Bay at the end of the route.

There are no signposts on this route.

The section between (8) and (9) is quite difficult due to the sudden change in elevation and unstable ground. Be careful.

Private property

The trails in Malta run alongside many private properties. These are indicated by various wooden signs or markings on the ground. The most common are:

  • Private property. No entry.
  • No entry
  • RTO for "Riservato".

Please respect these signs and do not stray from the route described.

Tarmac roads

Hiking trails in Malta often follow very narrow paved roads, most of which are lined with dry stone walls. Beyond their picturesque appearance, these walls obstruct visibility, so you must be very careful and walk on the side of the road and in single file if you are in a group. Vehicles (cars, vans and even heavy goods vehicles) drive fast and there are no hard shoulders. Don't forget that they drive on the left!

Cliffs

The route runs along cliffs several times and some sections require caution. In some places, the risk of falling or unstable cliff edges is indicated by signs, but there are few secure sections. Stay alert, especially if you are with children.

Place names

The spelling of some place names, road names and street names is not always 100% accurate. Maltese uses special typographical symbols such as a crossed H, etc., which do not exist on our keyboards. Remember that Triq means "street" or "road".

The best times for hiking in Malta are spring and the months of September and October. In March and April, the landscape remains green. The meadows, cliffs and roadsides are covered with beautiful multicoloured flowers.
Avoid the summer season, when temperatures easily exceed 37°C and the crowded beaches make hiking much less appealing.

We only did part of the coastal hike, following it from Golden Bay to Ir Ramala beach (see route in my photos). Walk around the large rock (Il Qarraba), even if the path isn't always obvious, and climb vertically above Qaraba beach for a superb view.

Good description. A tricky section for those prone to vertigo. Some beautiful views. A good insight into Maltese agriculture.

A magnificent hike. The first part allows you to discover the agricultural side of the island... it follows a paved road where there is hardly anyone around. You then come out onto the coast and its cliffs, which for me is the most beautiful view on the island: to the left below is a tiny cove where we regretted not going down to swim. After that, you follow the coastline, passing the two beaches mentioned above. There is a tricky section at the end of the first beach where you have to go beyond the protective barriers facing the crumbling cliff. At the end, just before you reach the second beach, the path is very impressive: you climb steeply without any protection on a clay slope. My wife, who is prone to vertigo, was very scared! Avoid on rainy days!

A very beautiful 8.5 km hike. The trail starts at the cliffs and returns via the beaches. The scenery is magnificent and, above all, you feel alone, far from tourists, cars, towns and pollution. However, be sure to use the Visorando app, as there are many possible routes and it is easy to get lost. We did this hike at a leisurely pace in 2 hours and 20 minutes. Only the last kilometre was a little difficult (although not too bad), but the breathtaking view of the succession of small bays made up for the effort. A hike not to be missed!

Superb hike in the north of the island.
Breathtaking views.
We climbed down to the foot of the Fomm ir-Rih cliffs to take a dip (a refreshing one!) in the turquoise water, alone in this vast expanse... a moment of pure bliss.
Be careful on the way down and up, as it's steep and sometimes unstable, but it's well worth the detour.
The end of this walk is also a wonderful surprise that I'll leave you to discover for yourselves!
