Saint Peter's Pool

Saint Peter's Pool, a magnificent natural swimming pool, is a must-see in southern Malta. However, at the start of this hike, you will have to ignore the chimneys of the gas terminal and the large container port of Pretty Bay. Once you turn your back on them, the rugged coastline, small bays and remarkable rocks, as well as the beautiful Saint Peter's Pool, will quickly make you forget these unsightly sites.

Description of the walk

At the roundabout at the entrance to Marsaxlokk, take the second street on the left (Triq Melqart), continue on Triq Bir Rikka and arrive at a new roundabout. Take the first exit on the left and continue to a crossroads where you turn right, following the signs for "Delimara - St Peter's Pool". Then turn left onto a very narrow road that leads to the old fortress of Tas Silg. At the next crossroads, leave the road and park on the right under the pine trees.

(S/E) Go back down the road you came on and turn left at the junction onto Triq Delimara. Continue along this narrow road with caution.

(1) Ignore the road on the left, which will be the return route, and continue straight ahead, enjoying the beautiful views of Marsaxlokk harbour. You will come to a junction with a road on the left that leads to Saint Peter's Pool.

(2) Ignore this road, continue straight ahead following the road sign for "Delimara" and start driving alongside the gas terminal facilities on your right below.

Pass a first road on the left, then a second cement road, and continue to the third, just before a small square building on the right of the road. Turn left, keep left at the fork that follows and continue for about 50 metres.

(3) Turn left at the corner of a wooden shelter used as a garage and follow a narrow path that leads to a low stone wall with a "No Entry" sign. Leave the path and descend onto the large rock slabs on your right to avoid this private area. Take a look at the small rock basins used to collect salt.

Further on, find a narrow path (marked with fluorescent orange markings on the ground) and walk along the sea, gaining a little height above the eroded rocks, some of which are remarkably shaped. You will reach Saint Peter's Pool.

(4) Go down the concrete steps to get closer to the crystal-clear pool. There are lots of places to picnic or just sunbathe.
Then climb back up the steps, turn right to go around the pool and continue as close to the sea as possible until you come to the gate of a private property.
Turn left and go up the narrow paved road to the corner of the wall of a large property.

(5) Leave the tarmac and take the narrow, barely visible path opposite, which starts just after a small cement section. Continue along this path along the cliff edge, which goes around the bay of Il-Hofra z-Zghira, framed by beautiful cliffs.
When you reach the junction with a path coming from the left (fluorescent orange markings on the ground), continue straight ahead to come out onto a wide dirt track at a sign warning of the risk posed by the unstable cliff.

(6) Turn right to reach the rocky point, which offers a magnificent view of the bay, then turn back.

(6) Continue straight ahead, turn left a few dozen metres further on and do the same at the next junction.

(1) Turn right, then right again at the hairpin bend to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

There are no water sources along the route, but there are plenty of options in Marsaxlokk.

Signposting

There are fluorescent orange markings on the ground along part of the route. This is quite rare in Malta, where signposting is very limited.

Private property

The trails in Malta run alongside many private properties. These are indicated by various wooden signs or markings on the ground. The most common are:

Private property. No entry.
No entry
RTO for "Riservato".
Please respect these signs and do not stray from the route described. Here, you must turn right after the (3) to avoid the private area indicated.

Tarmac roads

Hiking trails in Malta often follow very narrow paved roads, mostly lined with dry stone walls. Beyond their picturesque appearance, these walls obstruct visibility, so you must be very careful and walk on the side of the road and in single file if you are in a group. Vehicles (cars, vans and even heavy goods vehicles) drive fast and there are no hard shoulders. Don't forget that they drive on the left!

Cliffs

The route runs along cliffs several times and some sections require caution. In some places, the risk of falling or unstable cliff edges is indicated by signs, but there are few secure sections. Stay alert, especially if you are with children.

Place names

The spelling of some place names, road names and street names is not always 100% accurate. Maltese uses special typographical symbols such as a crossed H, etc., which do not exist on our keyboards. Remember that Triq means "street" or "road".

The best times for hiking in Malta are spring and the months of September and October. In March and April, the landscape remains green. The meadows, cliffs and roadsides are covered with beautiful multicoloured flowers.
Avoid the summer season when temperatures easily exceed 37°C and the crowded beaches make hiking much less appealing.

Worth a visit

We only did points 4-5-6 in reverse order and started with the Marsascala hike.
As nature lovers, we didn't continue on seeing the power station and didn't swim at St Peter's Pool, which was very crowded and littered with cigarette butts and cans.
A magnificent coastal hike from Marsascala to St Peter's Pool with a swim at It Tliet Hofried.
At point 6, follow the rocky point to the end and descend to Ras il Fenek (rocky esplanade)

Unfortunately, there is now a whole section between points 3 and 4 that is inaccessible: private property, guarded gates, dogs! Access is blocked
Otherwise, there's no problem at point 3: the dogs are effectively tied up.

very nice walk.
only downside: point 3 is a bit scary because you pass between 2 "constructions" with unfriendly dogs locked behind fences.
But otherwise it was perfect!
