Start: Mühlebühlbrücke Rohrhardsberg car park
(S/E) From the Mühlebühlbrücke Rohrhardsberg car park, the trail heads upstream along the River Elz over a wooden bridge after just a few metres.
(1) The path leads us past the Auerhahnkugelbahn – which forms part of the Rohrhardsberg Nature Discovery Area – to a car park.
(2) At the end of this, we turn right onto Richard-Tüchle-Weg (named after the long-serving trail warden of the Black Forest Association from 1950 to 1980) and then follow narrow paths through picturesque woodland up to the summit of the 1,163-metre Rohrhardsberg. The path leads through the Rohrhard ski resort. Behind the ski lift, we follow the path to the left and then left again, before the path turns right. We pass a crossroads and keep to the right; at the next junction, we continue straight on to the summit of the Rohrhardsberg.
(3) Next comes a viewpoint from which, in fine weather, we can look out over the Rhine Valley and the Vosges. We follow the path to the right and, shortly afterwards, to the right again. On this short stretch, we enjoy sweeping, impressive views towards the Northern Black Forest and the Swabian Alb. We take the second left and come across the rustic, wood-carved Schwendeschanze restaurant (open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays).
(4) We continue straight on for a while, then turn right and pass the impressive Schänzlehof (the highest farm in the Central Black Forest).
(5) We then head down to the listed Ochsenhof, following the main path all the way.
(6) The path then leads us steeply downhill alongside the stream to the former village centre of Rohrhardsberg, where we turn right.
(7) Passing the wet storage area – where the forestry commission uses environmentally friendly methods to keep the timber fresh for further processing – we head to the forest discovery centre with its climbing wild boar. A narrow path then leads along the Elz waterfalls back to the starting point at the Mühlebühl Bridge.
(S/E) A short distance further to the right along the L109 and we’re back at the car park.
