Blue markings no. 2
(S) Fontainebleau-Avon station. Coming from Paris or Melun, cross the tracks via an underpass. Go up the path opposite the station and cross Avenue Franklin Roosevelt. A tarmac road climbs up opposite; immediately on your right, take the blue marked path (Dénécourt path no. 2) which climbs into the forest.
(1) Pass several monuments dedicated to figures from the 19th century. Continue along the blue trail, parallel to the tarmac road (Route de la Reine Amélie).
(2) Pass the curious Roche Éponge, followed by several springs carved into the rock: Fontaine Isabelle, Fontaine Dorly, Fontaine Désirée, Fontaine du Touring Club.
(3) At the crossroads, take the blue trail between two tarmac roads and arrive at the Tour Dénécourt. View, orientation table.
(4) Set off again on the Blue trail no. 2, heading towards Rocher Cassepot, almost parallel and slightly to the right of the arrival trail. Follow this trail between the rocks for 300 metres.
Blue trail no. 3–2
(5) At the crossroads of blue marked paths, take No. 3–2 towards Rocher Cassepot. Cross the D116 and continue straight ahead for another 200 m. You will reach another crossroads of blue marked paths.
Blue markings no. 3
(6) Turn right onto the slightly uphill Blue trail no. 3 towards Rocher Cassepot. Pass the pretty Mares Froideau ponds and arrive at the northern viewpoint of Rocher Cassepot.
(7) Continue along the blue trail along the edge of the plateau. The path zigzags back almost to where you started and joins another crossroads with blue markings.
(8) Continue straight ahead on trail no. 3 and continue zigzagging between the rocks.
Blue markings No. 4–3
(9) At the junction of the blue marked paths, turn right, following the arrow painted on the rock "4" (this is actually the Chemin Dénécourt No. 4–3). (Alternative: walk 300 m back and forth on No. 4 to the southern viewpoint of Rocher Cassepot, overlooking the Solle racecourse.)
(10) After about 1 km, cross the D606 (formerly N6). Be careful, as this is a very busy road and crossing it is dangerous. Cross carefully at the blue signpost. Continue following the blue signposts on the other side of the road, in the Cabaret Masson site.
Blue markings no. 4
(11) At the signpost for the start of the Dénécourt path no. 4, marked in blue, which runs through the interesting Rocher Saint-Germain area, take the left branch (south) on a wide, flat path. (Alternative: the right branch, towards Rocher Canon, leads directly to the point (14)).
Path No. 4 zigzags between the climbing rocks. It remains roughly at the bottom of the valley, despite a few ascents and descents. Narrow passages between rocks, natural tunnels. At marker P, note a Madonna painted on the rock.
(12) At the Grotte aux Cristaux, protected by a gate, trail no. 4 curves to the right and returns in a circle to its starting point. Leave it momentarily to visit a pretty pond.
Off the trail
Climb the stairs opposite the Grotte aux Cristaux to a forest path. Take this path to the left. Cross the Route Ronde D142: fairly busy road, danger. Take the forest path opposite for 25 m, then turn left at a right angle onto a faint path. Join the Route de la Mare à Piat, follow the path to the right. Remains of old quarry paving.
(13) Mare à Piat, a very pretty pond with water lilies and benches. (Alternative: continue on to Mare à Dagneau, 300 m away, and back.)
Go around the pond on the left to reach a forest road (Route du Cuvier-Châtillon). Return to the Grotte aux Cristaux (12).
Blue markings no. 4
(12) Join the left (north) branch of the Dénécourt trail no. 4, blue markings. Unlike the south branch, this one runs higher up, zigzagging between the rocks at the edge of the plateau.
(14) Crossroads of blue-marked trails, marked by a sign on the right-hand side. Turn left uphill onto blue trail no. 12–4, towards Rocher Canon.
Blue markings no. 12–4
Walk along the flat for about 400 m. Note the change in geology: limestone replaces sandstone.
(15) At the junction of the blue marked trails, continue straight ahead on No. 12 towards Butte Saint-Louis.
Blue markings no. 12
Forest of large deciduous trees.
(16) Cross the D606 again, very carefully. Continue following the markings opposite for 400 m.
(17) Climb up to Butte Saint-Louis, which features the ruins of a medieval hermitage. At the bottom of the hill, at the crossroads, turn left at a right angle onto Blue trail no. 12.
(18) At Petit Mont, follow the markings through a small rocky area at the top. Once you have passed through, turn left and follow the blue markings (no. 12) for 100 metres.
Off the trail
At the Carrefour des Ventes Bouchard crossroads, leave the blue markings and take a wide forest path slightly to the left, the Route des Ventes Bouchard.
(19) Just before the next crossroads, take a path on the right at a right angle. Carefully cross the D138 at the roundabout to enter Bois-le-Roi.
(20) Continue straight ahead along Avenue de la Forêt until you reach the Bois-le-Roi SNCF train station (E). (Trains to Paris depart from the same side.)
