(S/E) Fontainebleau-Avon station, main exit. Coming from Paris, take the underpass. Cross the square in a straight line to take the staircase directly opposite. Cross the road (Avenue Franklin Roosevelt) then a small street running parallel to it (Route de la Bonne Dame).
Blue signpost no. 2
Take the blue-marked path which climbs straight up into the forest. After 250 m, cut across a circular loop of tarmac road (Route de la Reine Amélie, closed to cars) to head towards the bench opposite.
(1) Go round the bench and a small hillock on the left and pass in front of the monument to Foucher de Careil. The marked path remains parallel to the road, then gradually moves away from it. Pass in front of the Roche Éponge, the Fontaine Isabelle, the Fontaine Dorly and reach the Fontaine Désirée.
(2) Continue along the blue-marked trail under the trees for about 1 km. You will reach the Carrefour de la Tour Dénécourt.
(3) Take the clearly marked blue-signposted path opposite, between two roads at an acute angle. The path, which is flat at first, becomes quite steep as it climbs to the Tour Dénécourt.
(4) Several paths cross here: make sure you note the one you took to get here. Viewpoint from the tower.
Blue markings no. 14–15
Compared to the direction you arrived from, turn 90° to the left (towards the west-north-west), onto the blue-marked trail no. 14–15 +GR®13, descending via a flight of steps.
(5) At the junction with the Route d’Aumale, ignore theGR® markings and stay on the Blue markings. 300 m further on, cross the D116: take care! Heavy traffic. Then walk along a rocky ridge.
Offthe marked trail
(6) Leave the blue markings between plots 238 and 239 and turn left onto a well-marked sunken path, which climbs initially and then descends. 100 m further on, first turn left then right to cross the Route du Rocher Cassepot, then follow a well-marked path uphill.
Blue trail marker no. 3
(7) On the plateau, turn right onto the Blue-marked trail no. 3. Pass the northern viewpoint of Rocher Cassepot. Continue along the Blue markings as they zigzag between the rocks. There are two successive junctions with Blue trails (with no. 14, then with no. 4–3): at each one, keep left on no. 3.
(8) Southern viewpoint of Rocher Cassepot. Continue zigzagging, following the blue markings.
(9) Croix d'Augas junction (restaurant opposite). Cross the bridge over a four-lane road (D606).
Blue markings nos. 1–3
A few metres after the bridge, enter the woods via a path on the left, following the blue markings no. 1–3.
From here (and up to point (15)), the route makes an almost complete circle around the Rochers du Mont Ussy. The path zigzags, staying as close as possible to the edge of the plateau, then passes underneath it, whilst remaining at roughly the same level.
Blue signpost no. 1
(10) At the junction with Blue Marker No. 1, follow this to the right, staying at the same level.
(11) Note a very faded painting of the Virgin Mary on a rock. Continue along the Blue signpost.
(12) At the sign for the “Shortcut via the Grotte des Montussiennes”, you can either take the shortcut to the left or continue straight on following the markings (the two paths rejoin shortly after point (13)).
(13) Grotte des Montussiennes. Pass to the left of it, under two boulders. Continue to the forest house on the flat ground (car park).
(14) Turn left onto a forest road. 150 m further on, turn 90° right onto a path, then after another 200 m, at the Carrefour de la Vallée de la Chambre, turn 90° left. You will arrive at a wide, flat forest road (Route du Mont Ussy, car park visible on the left).
GR® white-red markings
(15) Leave the blue markings and turn right onto the GR®-marked track.
(16) Pass close to the Notre-Dame de Bon Secours Chapel. Cross the dual-carriageway D606 at a pedestrian crossing protected by traffic lights. Stay on theGR® markings, ignoring the blue markings, to reach Fontainebleau-Avon station (S/E).
