Access and starting point:
Cross the town of Marcoussis via the D446 and follow the signs for the Centre National du Rugby (CNR). At the traffic lights, take Rue Jean de Montaigu, on the left if coming from Linas, on the right if coming from Les Ulis, and pass the entrance to the CNR. Park in the parking spaces on the right-hand side of the street, along the Stade Pierre Camou. The entrance to the forest is on the left-hand side of the street, at the pedestrian crossing.
If there are no spaces available, go to the end of the street and turn left. There is a small car park at the end of this second street. Start your walk at (1).
There are several types of markings, which are only mentioned in the description when necessary.
(S/E) Cross the street at the pedestrian crossing, go through a wooden gate and enter the forest (information board). Immediately turn left and walk along the Salmouille river on your left. At thefirst intersection, turn right (yellow arrow + red and white arrow) and walk up a path lined with four tall plane trees.
(1) At the three-way junction (old ice house opposite, small car park on the right), turn left.
(2) At the next three-way junction, note a remarkable oak tree on the left and turn right (red and white markings). Walk along a pond on your left, ignore a path on the right and cross a stream. Then pass a covered fountain on the right-hand side. At the three-way junction that appears shortly afterwards, turn left (red and white markings). At the next fork, turn right and leave the forest. You will come to a crossroads with a signpost marked "Promenade de la Salmouille".
(3) Turn right at an acute angle and descend onto a gravel path. Pass between two large lawns. Ignore a cement path on the left and turn right onto the gravel path. Then make a wide hairpin turn to the left. Ignore a path on the right and reach the bridge over the Salmouille.
(4) Cross the river and note the view of the Donjon de Montlhéry on the right. Stay on the wide gravel path, walk along an old wetland on your left (Bassin de Guillerville) and ignore all the paths on the right. As you pass, note the information board. Note the multi-trunk plane tree below on the right and return to the crossroads you took earlier.
(3) Turn right downhill and re-enter the forest. At the next intersection (forest sign), go straight ahead and walk along the Salmouille on your right. Walk gently upstream, note an old stone bridge and cross a stream. At the next intersection, note the large oak tree on your left that you saw on the way there. Continue along the river and note the CNR buildings on the other bank. At the next intersection, go straight ahead and exit the forest. Cross the street at the pedestrian crossing and return to the starting car park (S/E).
