Fleurs de Lys from the Royal Forest of Prades in Ariège

In the 17th century, according to a report from 1661, the poorly managed forests no longer provided enough timber for shipbuilding. Louis XIV (1638–1715) and Colbert drew up a new forestry code in 1669, which Louis de Froidour (1625–1685) was tasked with implementing in the Pyrenean mountains.
Thus, in Ariège, he established the royal forest of Prades around 1670, demarcated by stone markers bearing the Fleur-de-lis, the royal emblem. Even today, there are still around thirty of these fleurs-de-lis that have stood the test of time, offering themselves to the view of walkers. This trail, in its full version, will allow you to spot up to twelve fleurs-de-lis!

Description of the walk

Set off from the car park on the Sept Cazes plateau.

(S/E) Go through the cattle grid and the Canadian gate and take the forest track until you are directly below the Col d’Audouze.

(1) Then leave the track and head straight up to the pass (alt. 1,657 m), keeping the Rocher de Scaramus on your left.

(2) Continue to the left, leaving the Audouze fountain and the pond on your right, to reach a ridge overlooking the Bois du Bramefan.

(3) The first fleur-de-lys, No. 1 (Replat), which is situated on the plateau, is positioned horizontally and overlooks the forest below. Carry on to the summit of the Rocher de Scaramus (elevation 1868) to find the fleur de lys No. 2 (Scaramus), 5 m from the fence on the Ax valley side. It is weathered.

(4) Stay on the ridge, keeping to the right towards Pic Fourcat, then veer right to reach Fleur de Lys No. 3 (Beziat) a little further down.

(5) From there, a marked path takes you to No. 4 (Mounégou), which is carved vertically into the Rocher de Mounegou (elevation 1,687) – go round it on the left.

(6) Stay at the edge of the forest, following a marked path which eventually leads into the forest and descends to the Ruisseau de Ferrière.

(7) Head down to the right. Markers No. 5 (Ruisseau de la Ferrière) and No. 6 (Ferrière Champ des Moles) run alongside the Ruisseau de Ferrière.

(8) Leave the stream bed after passing the fleur-de-lis marker No. 6. Head deeper into the forest, staying on the same contour line, until you reach the slope leading to the Boudègue farm.

(9) As you emerge from the forest, cross the sloping clearing through the undergrowth to find, a little further up, No. 7 (Boudègue bas) near a large ash tree. Then head down to the ruins of the farm, then turn right to reach No. 8 (Boudègue haut), which is so named because it lies upstream of the stream even though it is at a lower altitude than No. 7.

(10) Head back towards the stream to reach No. 9 (Boudègue champ), which is the easiest to find as it is carved into the largest rock visible in the field.

(11) The climb then begins, along a marked path, up to the outskirts of the Col de la Gardie.

(12) The more adventurous can take a circular route to find two further fleurs-de-lis.

(13) First, head via the Airolle rock to admire No. 10 (Ayrolle). Then look for No. 11 (Spereguils), carved vertically into a hollow in the cliff and difficult to find.

(14) Head back down to the Col de la Gardie, turn right, then veer left to reach No. 12 (Roc de la Nère), engraved vertically on a large rock 4 metres high.

(15) Head down to the left towards La Fontaine, then on to the Col d’Audouze.

(2) Follow the ascent route in the opposite direction to return to the car park (S/E).

Unmarked route, impassable paths, not recommended for hikers.
Above all, do not venture onto this trail.
The author is irresponsible for suggesting and posting this hike on Visorando without any signposting.
Very disappointing and a shame, as it could have been interesting.

Thank you, Nikos84, for your comment. I’ve corrected the route between (11) and (12); as for the rest, I don’t have the information needed to do anything about it.
We’ll see what the next reviews bring…

Hello, a lovely and interesting walk following the Fleurs de Lys trail. The creator’s comments are spot on. However, there are a few issues with the route: it’s fine up to point 8 and then from point 12 onwards. But the section between points 8 and 11 is rather uninteresting, with the route running along a slope with no proper path or points of interest. From point 8, you need to head down into the valley and turn right to reach point 11. The route also needs reviewing between points 11 and 12, as there is a path but the route doesn’t match it. Please review these two points to ensure the walk remains enjoyable! I’d like to point out that we undertook this walk with experienced walkers who are used to using Visorando (I’ve personally created 10 walks) at a rate of around forty a year. We’d never encountered this sort of problem on a route before. Please correct this for future walkers. Have a good day. Nikos 84

Disappointing because in winter there’s a section I couldn’t get to because of the snow… that’s why I was disappointed… but I didn’t see ANYONE… The cold was so intense that I made the most of it whilst I could… ( castle ruins)

A unique walk in search of the lilies in the Royal Forest of Prades. My only criticism is that the section from point 8 to point 9 is a bit tricky through the undergrowth and in the woods; what’s more, we couldn’t find flower no. 7, and it was also difficult to find no. 8 – it took us quite a while…but it was fascinating. The rest of the route posed no problems. In fact, from point 8, you can head straight through the valley to point 11 at the Boudègue farm; this avoids a few physically demanding sections and some navigation issues.

An interesting, accessible walk with lovely panoramic views of the Pyrenees, but it’s difficult to find your bearings to spot the fleurs-de-lis marked on the route, which is, after all, the whole point of the walk… Particularly from marker No. 5 onwards. The Ruisseau de Ferrières is virtually non-existent, and the markers in the forest (near a large beech tree!) are impossible to find… The map provided by Visorando is confusing.
A shame
Kind regards
