Fajã Quebrada Nova

This is a short but intense downhill hike to Fajã Quebrada Nova, a small farming hamlet on an ancient scree slope (see definition of "Fajã") at the ocean's edge and at the foot of the Achadas da Cruz cliffs.

The cable car ride up (for a fee, €3 in 2022) will also give you some thrills!

Description of the walk

Start: Start from the top of the Achadas da Cruz cable car (follow the "Teleférico" signs through the village).
Parking lot at the end of the road.

(S) Walk between the cable car and the bar/restaurant and walk down the path along the Vereda da Quebrada Nova trail.
The descent is quite steep and slippery, with a lovely panorama over the formerly cultivated terraces of Borda da Ladeira. The further down you go, the closer you get to the Ribeira do Tristão ravine, with some dizzying stretches, particularly when you reach an intersection in a hairpin bend.

(1) Continue along the path, which descends to the left and ends up on a set of small steps, arriving at the ocean's edge on a beach of huge pebbles (bathing not possible) at the mouth of the above-mentioned ravine.

(2) Continue along the wall on the left to rejoin the path a few metres further on. After a small climb, you soon arrive at the departure point of the cable car.

(E) Reach a paved path behind the cable car cabin.

(3) Follow this path alongside the hamlet of Calhau das Achadas.

(4) Continue straight ahead, leaving the return path on your left.
After passing a few fields dotted with houses, the walk skirts along a new beach and climbs up to more small houses at Fajã Quebrada Nova.

(5) At the first junction, follow a small concrete path to the right for another round walk. Walk amidst the few houses and discover a lovely view of other cliffs at the foot of Achadas da Cruz, then retrace your steps.

(5) On the way back, feel free to turn right for another out-and-back along the main promenade, to gain a little height.

(5) On your way back, head back towards Calhau das Achadas along the cobbled promenade until you reach an intersection at the entrance to the hamlet.

(4) Follow the arrow on the right indicating "Teleférico". Follow this little path winding its way between houses, fields and small irrigation canals until you get back onto the paved path just behind the departure point of the cable car (E).

Notes

Start: Start from the top of the Achadas da Cruz cable car (follow the "Teleférico" signs through the village).
Parking lot at the end of the road.

Note: The cable car is open every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., €3 one way (€5 round trip) (in 2022).

Before you leave the cable car, make sure to ask whether it will be open for the way back up.

To go back up, we had to press the green button in the cabin to signal to the attendant that we were ready.

Terrain: ⚠️This is a hike with a few vertiginous passages, therefore some people should be aware that they may encounter such passages.

Gears: No shade (bring your hat, sunglasses and sunscreen).

Worth a visit

The view from the top of the cable car is breathtaking.

This 451 meter high aerial tramway, with no intermediate pylons, is extremely impressive.
Its gradient is up to 98%!

With its half-abandoned farmhouses, the atmosphere of Calhau das Achadas is very special. It's like being at the end of the world...

the descent was a little difficult because there was a lot of slippery mud, it's very beautiful but you have to watch your feet because you're rubbing the precipice all the time, not to be done with children; the ascent by cable car is nice, there is a little waiting time because many people go down and back up by cable car, cost 3 €.

Splendid views, downhill in the first part. Check the weather conditions, if it rains or is damp the ground can be very slippery.
Not very popular.
The cable car is closed between 12 noon and 1 p.m.
