Seixal- Châo da Ribeira

Nice climb in the hinterland. A walk away from the crowd in the undergrowth between ferns and laurel. Beautiful views of the surrounding area.

Description of the walk

Start: Several options, depending on parking availability:
- Parking at the start of the pier, after the Hotel Brisa Mar and the Clube Naval do Seixal (this is the location shown on the route).
- On the bend before starting the descent to the black sand beach.
- On the old ER 101 at the top of the village, next to the signpost indicating the Châo de Ribeira walk.

(S/E) From the start of the pier, drive up the street you've just driven down, Rua Joâo Fernandes Correia. Take a sharp bend to the right and go as far as number 22. Then turn left onto the street. At the end, after about 80 m, turn right. After about 50 m, reach an 'azuleros' depicting a monk carrying a small child (inscription 1-4-1939) above a small box containing two small statues. Turn left and walk up until you come to reach the old ER101 with the signpost indicating the walk.

(1) Climb the few steps to the right and carry on upwards, this time on a gravel path with small, rounded steps. Cross the new VE2 road, and follow the Châo da Ribeira sign beside a reservoir with a water tap. Shortly after entering the village of Serrado, a sign on our left points the way toward Paul da Serra. Ten metres further on, reach a small bridge on your right.

(2) Take the bridge, then turn left into the village's main street.

(3) Continue South along the street. On leaving the village, follow the Châo da Ribeira sign to the left, next to a fountain with its tap. Pass by a laurel and fern wood, then come to a bridge over a small tarmac road.

(4) Go down the few steps on the left at the start of the bridge to turn left onto the road (Caminho da Fonte). Follow this road for about 1.5 Km to reach a bridge over the Ribeira do Seixal.

(5) Cross the river and carry on a dirt track. Walk past a restaurant car park, continue South past a trout farm. At last, you reach the catchment basin of a levada which will serve the fish farm.

(6) Return by the same route to the bridge over the river.

(5) After the bridge, leave the road you previously used and turn left. Walk North, past a restaurant, then right with the road.

(7) Before a sharp left-hand bend, turn right onto a dirt track in front of a house. Follow the gardens and find the bridge over the tarmac road.

(4) Follow the same track (East then North) as before. Rejoin the road and enter the small village of Serrado.

(3) Leave the road and take the track to the right, which runs alongside an almost dry irrigation canal.

(2) Follow the same route as the outward journey to the jetty (S/E).

A pleasant walk without being exceptional.
The start gets you going straight away. I counted 930 steps.
Apart from the steps, there are no difficulties. This hike is accessible to anyone who can walk a little.
There are some pleasant viewpoints.

Not a pleasant walk, and the end adds nothing. What's more, the loops are no longer relevant.

Hello everyone,
Hiking on the island of Madeira without any great difficulty, with some lovely restful spots to discover along these atypical paths. Really worth discovering.
It's pleasant from time to time just to listen to nature.
