Description of the walk

Access to start: From Porto Moniz, take the ER101 towards Achadas da Cruz. About 1 Km further on, in a left-hand bend, find the start of PR®7 (signposted).

(S) Go South on the small track that climbs slightly for 600m until you reach the Levada do Moinho.

(1) At the levada, turn right towards Madre da Levada (sign). Walk up the levada through calluna. Arrive at a waterfall which falls into a basin: this is the start of the levada.

(2) Retrace your steps until you reach the junction with the track you took on the outward journey.

(1) Continue along the Levada do Moinho (in the direction of the current), following the signs for Junqueira, still on PR®7. When the levada cascades down, leave it and take a path to the left, which soon gives way to a wooden staircase. Catch up with the levada futher on and continue following the signs to Junqueira.

(3) Shortly before the village, walk away again from the levada in order to follow a dirt track which can be slippery as water runs over it. Come to a tarmac road, the Caminho do Pico Alto, and follow it to the right towards Junqueira.

(4) Before reaching the first houses, find the levada on your right. Follow it again in the direction of the current. Cross two tarmac roads in succession.

(5) Just before the end of the village, leave the levada again and turn left, up a flight of steps, onto the asphalt road. Follow this road to the right for just a few hundred metres.

(6) Walk under the main road through a small tunnel and reach the village of Lamaçeiras. Turn left at the next T-junction. At the next crossroads, go straight on, then take the second turning on the right, the Caminho da Assomada. Continue along this tarmac road to a viewpoint overlooking Porto Moniz by almost 300m.

(7) Continue downhill with a few steep switchbacks. Join the main road ER101 and follow it to the right. After 100m, at a fork in the road, turn left onto Rua dos Capitaes. At the next crossroads, after 200m, turn right.

(8) After 20m, take the left-hand staircase (Caminho da Ladeira), which continues along a small path towards the town center, in front of the bus and cab/taxi stops (E).

A very beautiful hike that requires parking in Porto Moniz and taking a taxi to the starting point of the walk. (20 or 25 euros for two people)
A sign indicated that the trail was closed, but the taxi driver told us we could use it without any problems, which we did...
It was truly magnificent and safe.
A superb arrival in Porto Moniz, but everything before that is sumptuous.
It's the most beautiful hike we've done in Madeira!
