Etton, Cambridgeshire via Maxey Cut and return via South Drain

This is a walk that can have a good number of water birds, especially at breeding and winter times. The start is at The Golden Pheasant PE6 7DA, which has excellent food. Just after waymark 1 is a bird observation station with views of the lake. The Maxey Cut has a variety of birds, including Heron and Little Egret. The old gravel pit lakes have Greylag Geese, Swans and a variety of ducks.

Description of the walk

The walk starts at The Golden Pheasant 1, Main Road Etton PE6 7DA

(S/E) From the Golden Pheasant, turn left and follow the road through the village of Etton, passing the church on your left. Follow the road for about 600 metres to reach WM1, a few hundred metres after the South Drain.

(1) Turn left onto footpath/bridleway and continue straight for just over a kilometre. The path then turns right; follow for 250 metres to reach WM2.

(2) Just before the bridge over Maxey Cut, turn left to follow Maxey Cut for about 1.2 kilometres to reach Maxey Road. Turn left and follow Maxey Road for 300 metres to reach WM3 (next junction).

(3) Follow South Drain on your left for about two kilometres.
Note: The footpath diverts to the right and then back again to get around gravel pit workings.
When you reach the road, turn right and return to Etton village and on to The Golden Pheasant.(S/E)

Notes

Stout boots recommended, especially in wet weather. Also, a visit to Etton church, which is always open.
