We recommend starting from the small car park in the village of Cessey (25440), at the junction of Grande Rue and Rue du Crotot, near a drinking trough.
(S/E) At the start, do not take the yellow and red markedGRP® trail, but take Grande Rue towards Charnay, passing in front of the town hall: watch out for vehicles as the road is narrow for 300 metres.
(1) At No. 26, turn left onto Rue du Dauphiné and follow this street down to the Loue river (left bank).
(2) Once at the bottom, continue straight ahead on the main path, which becomes stony after about 2 kilometres, then grassy, still close to the river.
(3) Shortly after the fourth kilometre, leave this wide path and turn right onto a steep trail that winds its way up towards the forest: this is the most difficult kilometre of the hike, with a gradient of over 15% and a small spring that may be visible depending on the season.
Continue climbing this long slope, which levels out a little at the top, until you cross mountain bike trail no. 85, almost at the top.
(4) Turn sharply left and follow this new path for 350 metres, then leave it by turning right.
(5) You will come to the first houses of Champ du Fourneau, in the upper part of the commune of Cessey. There is an unobstructed view of the first plateaus. Pass the 6th kilometre and join the tarmac road of La Grande Plaine.
(6) Go down this road on the right to the crossroads at the bottom, at the D110. Follow it for a few metres on the right, then cross over to take a path opposite that leads back into the forest at a cross (there is another car park nearby and another possible starting point).
(7) Take this wide path which climbs southwards until you reach the ridge; pass close to Mont de Cessey, the highest point in the area.
(8) Continue straight ahead and begin the descent on this main path, passing the 8th kilometre. You will arrive at a crossroads of several paths in the forest. Continue straight ahead to reach a large field: there are easily passable gates at the entrance and exit, which should be closed properly if there are cattle present (please keep dogs on a lead). Pass close to a water tower, with a new unobstructed view to the south and east.
(9) At the D101, cross and then turn right, this time following theGRP® towards Quingey, until you reach your destination.
First follow the departmental road, pass a small picnic area, then cross the D101 a second time (another car park and another possible starting point), and descend towards the village of Cessey via a wide, fairly steep stony path for about a hundred metres. Return to the starting point by arriving at the first houses via Rue du Crotot and theGRP® (S/E).
