Between two abbeys: Notre-Dame de l'Annonciation and Sainte-Madeleine

A beautiful walk, accessible to everyone, between two Benedictine abbeys: Notre-Dame de l'Annonciation and Sainte-Madeleine, with a passage next to the old 19th-century aqueduct that supplied water to Le Barroux. Pretty landscapes: vineyards, olive trees, views of the Dentelles de Montmirail, Saint-Amand, Château du Barroux and Mont Ventoux.

Description of the walk

Arrive via the D938, between Carpentras and Malaucène, at the large car park of the Abbaye Notre-Dame de l'Annonciation (signposted at the exit). Coming from Malaucène via the D938, about 500 m after the Col Ronin, take the Chemin des Ambrosis which leads to the Abbey car park.

(S/E) With the abbey on your left, take Chemin des Ambrosis, facing the Dentelles de Montmirail and Saint-Amand, until you reach a crossroads.

(1) Continue straight on Chemin de l'Aqueduc. There isa lovely view of the Château du Barroux on the left (bench).

(2) After a short descent, just before the bend, don't miss a small path on the left that leads to the old aqueduct, or rather what remains of it. A sign explains its history. The circular arches highlight the difference between this building and the Roman constructions still found in the region. Go back up to the road and continue to the "Bois Long" sign.

(3) Cross the road and take the GRP® opposite, towards Rabassières. Do not go down to your left, but continue straight ahead on the barely visible path (still marked GRP®). You will come to an intersection.

(4) Turn right, ignore Chemin de Devez on your left and descend to the sign for "Rabassières".

(5) Head towards Le Barroux on the left and continue to the path that leads to the Abbaye de la Madeleine.

(6) Turn left onto this path and continue to a fountain (the water is not drinkable).

(7) Walk back up to the large car park at the abbey.

(8) Go around to the right. You can visit the church, the well-stocked monastic shop and bookshop, and the Oratory of Our Lady of Guadalupe (currently under renovation - 2025). Go back down the road to the fork in the road on the way there.

(4) Turn right, pass by the monks' oil mill and arrive at a fork.

(9) Just before the sign for "Les Grands Terres", turn left towards Aqueduc. At the next crossroads, do not turn left towards Aqueduc, but continue straight on until the next fork.

(10) Just before the sign: Attention! Passage à gué (ford), turn left and continue to the crossroads on the way out.

(1) Turn right and take the outward route in the opposite direction to the car park (S/E).

The hike is accessible to everyone. IBP 27, fairly easy effort (2), fairly easy technicality (2), low risk (1). Much of the hike is on small roads with little traffic, but caution is advised, especially if you are with children.

A very beautiful hike along quiet roads and a few paths. Completed in 1 hour 45 minutes at a brisk pace. Suitable for everyone. Lovely vegetation, vineyards, olive trees, cherry trees and beautiful landscapes.

Although most of the hike is on narrow roads, they are rarely used and the route is really very pleasant. There are also a few sections on forest paths. A lovely circular route around the two abbeys that is very accessible!
I followed the GPX route and had no difficulty.
