Description of the walk

Start: Hayburn Wyke Inn, Cloughton, Scarborough, YO13 OAU

(S) From the car park, turn right (southeast) and walk along the access road for approximately 100m, then bear left along the track with the campsite on your right. Before you reach the end of the campsite, look for a path to your left across the field towards the tree line where you should see an information board.

(1) Turn right back onto the Cleveland Way, the woodland will be on your left and fields to your right, first in a southeast direction and then a southerly direction.

(2) After approximately 1 km you will reach a footpath junction with a bench. This is clearly signposted Cleveland Way, keep left. Continue along the clifftops taking in the view along the way. Continue until you reach Sycarham Wood.

(3) Continue south emerging from Sycharham Wood along the cliff tops. There are a number of steps down and then up at a beck.

(4) At Salt Pans Road the path turns east then southwest again. There are a number of steps here. Continue south and navigate a third set of steps, after which the path turns east. Look back to see the route you have just taken.

(5) Climb down and cross the footbridge. Climb back up to the path, this is semi-paved. Continue along the path, navigating several sets of steps. The path will swing east reaching the Long Nab Bird Observatory.

(6) Although the bird observatory is private, there is a view point here with spectacular views along the coast and is well worth stopping for. Continue southwards, you will pass a number of benches if you want to stop and take in the view. On reaching the path junction, bear left to continue onto the next section of the walk or bear right to Field Lane Car Park (E).

Practical information

Transport: There is a car park at Hayburn Wyke Inn, but please check it is ok to park there. There is also a small car park at the end of the walk. Follow the road into the village of Burniston to the Three Jolly Sailor's Pub from where you can catch bus 5 (Mon/Sat). You may need a taxi to make the return journey. Alternatively, you can make this a circular walk by taking the Cinder Track from Burniston back to the Hayburn Wyke Inn.

Facilities: Refreshments can be taken at a number of bars in Burniston and at the Hayburn Wyke Inn at the beginning of the walk. There are no facilities along the way.

Accessibility/Terrain: This section of the walk is along the cliffs and this is very exposed and can be windy. Good foodwear, warm clothes in winter, as this path can be muddy. Care should be taken at all times on the cliff tops. An alternative is to bypass the coastal walk and use the Cinder Track as an alternative route.
