Description of the walk

Access: To reach the starting point in Pouilly-en-Auxois, take the road towards Saulieu.
Just before leaving the village, turn left (Rue de la Coopérative) to reach the car park at the Port du Canal de Bourgogne harbour master’s office (Pouilly-en-Auxois Tourist Office).

(S/E) From the harbour master’s office (Pouilly-en-Auxois Tourist Office), head towards Lock No. 1, which is nearby; pass in front of it and turn left to cross the bridge.

(1) After the bridge, turn right to follow the cycle path running alongside the canal. Pass in front of locks 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.

Green/Yellow signposting

(2) After lock no. 7, cross the D977bis, turn right and cross the bridge over the canal. Turn left to take the opposite bank of the canal in the same direction (north). Follow the edge of the canal until you cross a stream running beneath it.

(3) Go down the steps on the right and follow the stream until you reach a path on the left. Follow this path, turning right at every junction.

(4) When you reach the D970 road, cross it and turn left, follow it for about a hundred metres, then turn right to go under an old railway line. Go straight up the path opposite to the bridge over the canal’s supply channel. Turn left without crossing it. Follow the channel to a bridge where a small road passes over it.

(5) When you reach the bridge, turn right and follow the path through the Veuchey farm. Follow this path eastwards and climb up to the edge of the woods where it turns right. When you reach the plateau, continue along this path which turns left; further on, ignore a path on the left and another on the right at a cross.

(6) Continue straight on until you reach the next path on the right. Follow this path down to a T-junction, turn right, continue straight on along the tarmac road and enter Bellenot-sous-Pouilly.

Take the first street on the left, pass a fountain and continue following the signposts. Leave the tarmac and turn left onto a path that crosses a tree plantation and then climbs up towards the plateau.

(7) At the crossroads at the top, the path turns left at a 90° angle. Follow the signposts carefully until you reach a path that is half-gravel, half-tarmac at a T-junction. There, turn right and follow this path. Pass a path on the right, then another on the left, and continue to the next T-junction with a tarmac path.

(8) When you reach the “Combe Carrée” junction, turn right and follow this path to the next T-junction.

(9) At the junction, veer right and cross the road to take a path immediately on the left. Follow the markings closely along a track that winds through copses and fields. Pass the next two paths on the left.

Continue to a stony path, ignore the next path on the left and head towards a junction by a telecommunications pylon. Reach the tarmac road and follow it for a few metres along its course, then turn left at the first path.

(10) A little further on, take a moment to admire the view from the Esplanade de la Vierge and continue, avoiding a path that descends to the right. Follow the signposts to the T-junction.

(11) Turn right to head down to the village of Pouilly-en-Auxois.

(12) Cross over towards the war memorial, then take Rue René Laforge, which slopes slightly to the right.

(13) Take Rue du 8 mai 1945 on the right, just after a bar, to reach the exit of the canal tunnel.

Off the marked route

(14) Turn right then left to follow the right bank of the canal. Follow the bank to the harbour.

(15) When you reach the harbour, take a quick look at the tugboat as you pass. Walk along the harbour on the left to reach the car park.

Worth a visit

(1) Former hydroelectric power station used to power the canal boat. This station operated using water from the canal harbour. There was a similar station at the other end of the canal tunnel, at the port of Escommes.

(5) Veuchey Valley.

(6) Calvary.

(10) Statue of the Virgin Mary and a lovely viewpoint.

(13) Street overlooking the canal tunnel.

(14) Northern exit of the canal tunnel (3,333 m long).

(15) The pusher. This electrically powered boat was propelled by pulling itself along a chain. It was used to move barges from one end of the tunnel to the other.

The Auxois region boasts an interesting landscape thanks to the hedgerows that still remain, unlike in other parts of the Morvan, but you don’t see them on this walk. Apart from the wooded areas, there are just vast fields and no birds.

I must admit I don’t know much about reading a map, but with the additional explanations, I was able to lead a group.
However, the steps at point 3 are difficult to find due to the vegetation.
You shouldn’t rely too much on the signposting, which is scarce or hard to see.
The walk is interesting for its sights: the canal, the canal’s feed channel, the various viewpoints, the exit from the underground canal, the harbour, and the canal boat.
At this time of year, this walk is very pleasant in terms of the vegetation (orchids, field beans, cornflowers, bellflowers, etc.)

The walk comes to an abrupt end at point 3; the steps have been swallowed up by the grass and undergrowth, and it’s impossible to make the descent to the stream!

Wonderful solo walks in the heart of Burgundy. Very peaceful: I didn’t come across a single person, just herons, cows, horses, deer, and so on. A fairly easy route. The only downside: the noise from the motorway at the start and a few wide tracks to cross later on

Actually, I haven't used the data from this hike yet; I'm asking the owner for permission first, as stated on the homepage...

To be honest, I hadn’t realised that was the case...

My apologies
