Passing through Negressauve and Le Luc de Verrines

A lovely walk on the Mellois plateau. Varied landscapes with a mix of fields and wooded areas. Passing through the villages of Negresauve and Le Luc de Verrines, in particular, offers a good view of traditional architecture.

Description of the walk

Parking at a place called La Caillaudrie at the north-eastern exit of the hamlet of Négressauve: the crossroads is very wide and offers space to park around ten cars without obstructing traffic.

(S/E) Enter Négressauve via Rue de Brioutel. At the first junction, turn right into a small street between two houses, then right again where the street quickly turns into a path. This path runs alongside gardens and leads to Chemin du Rulot.

(1) Turn left onto this path. Pass the two houses on the right and turn right immediately after the second one. You must go all the way round this house and take the path that appears, turning left at the back of the gardens adjoining the houses in the hamlet. This path runs alongside a small Protestant cemetery situated at the bottom of a garden. Continue on to Rue de Negressauve: you’ll reach it at a right-angle bend. Follow the right-hand lane straight ahead, leaving the other branch of the street which joins Rue de Brioutel (the main street in Négressauve).

(2) At the crossroads, turn right onto Chemin des Acacias. Leave Négressauve via this path. At the crossroads near La Proutée, continue straight ahead and follow Rue de la Proutée.

(3) At the junction with the Route de Vee de Melle, turn left. The road remains level and moves away from the houses before reaching the first dwellings of Le Luc. At the next junction, continue straight ahead, passing a first road on the right and immediately a road on the left.

(4) At the junction with the first farm track, turn right into Rue des Champs. This leads to Le Luc de Verrines. Follow it and cross Le Luc, then take Rue du Luc to the junction with Rue de la Pyramide. Turn right and immediately left into Chemin du Petit Souper.
At the end of this path, turn left onto Chemin du Coteau, which soon joins Route de la Doie; take this road by turning left.

(5) When you reach the first of the two cemeteries (on the right), take the path on the right, walk alongside the cemetery and continue. This path leads, near a cross, onto Chemin de la Racaudrie (road); turn right onto this downhill road, cross a small valley and begin to climb again.

(6) At the first T-junction, turn left towards Follet. Cross a small bridge, and a little further on, before a second bridge spanning the Belle near the entrance to Follet, turn right onto a steeply ascending farm track. The climb soon levels off considerably. The farm track runs alongside the Bois du Quart.

(7) Further up, turn left onto the forest track which, after a few hundred metres, joins a road coming from La Mouline.

(8) This road is initially level. Just as it begins to descend steeply, a forest track starts opposite on the right-hand side of the road. Take this track. A few hundred metres further on, the track passes in front of a traditional, isolated house. The track curves to the right before winding its way along. A farm track joins from the right; ignore it and continue to the left. At the next crossroads of tracks, follow the one on the right uphill, which quickly opens out onto a plateau between fields.

(9) At the T-junction of farm tracks, turn left towards Feu. The track skirts the Garenne valley. At the entrance to the hamlet, leave a road on your left and continue along the road opposite.
At the end, continue straight on along the farm track.

(10) When you reach a road at a T-junction, turn right.

(11) At the junction of the road and a farm track, about two hundred metres before a water tower, turn left onto the farm track. The track climbs slightly (less than 10m). At the top of the hill, leave a farm track on your left. The farm track crosses a small road twice: on both occasions, continue straight ahead. As you approach Négressauve, leave a path on your right.

Just before the finish, the farm track joins the road coming from La Proutée. Another fifty metres or so and you reach the car park which was the starting point for this walk (S/E).

Notes

A hike over varied terrain: mainly farm tracks and small roads. Sturdy footwear is required despite the easy going route.

Worth a visit

In Négressauve, a private Protestant cemetery.

History – The plot on which this cemetery stands belonged in the early 19th century to Pierre Andrault, mayor of the commune of Saint-Martin-lès-Melle. In 1828, when the estate was divided among his six children, this garden formed part of one of his daughters’ share; then, in 1857, it became the property of Barbault de La Mothe, a judge in Poitiers. It was around 1880 that François Fouché-Aumonier, residing in the village of La Grand-Rue in Verrines, acquired the property. He was buried there in 1907. But long before that date, other graves had been dug there: as early as 1880, those of Pierre Fouché, husband of Marie Fouché, and of Suzanne Aumonier, wife of Jacques Moreau, who died in Negressauve.

Description – It occupies an almost quadrangular plot covering an area of 6 ares 54 and is surrounded by rubble stone walls which are beginning to crumble in several places. The graves are all arranged in parallel and aligned in eight rows of varying numbers. They are slab graves of various shapes (gable-ended, truncated trapezoidal). Many bear an inscription engraved either on the west face of the slab or on the top of the slab.

Thank you for your comment (BONIN Danie).
Your suggestion doesn’t seem any clearer to me: in fact, for much of the year the vegetation is such that Follet is barely visible from the road, whereas the second bridge comes into view just as you need to turn right onto the uphill service road.
The description has, incidentally, been rated ‘good’ and ‘very good’ by all the hikers who took the time to comment on my suggestion.
Happy hiking.

Thank you for your comment (eiram58).
This hike, often undertaken with a group of walkers, is the result of a thorough knowledge of the area. The unmarked routes suggested require hikers to follow both the map and the route description carefully in order to fully enjoy the often beautiful scenery.
Happy hiking.

A lovely walk with varied scenery...
At point 6... the direction to Le Follet isn’t signposted... So follow the map carefully...
Be careful when turning onto the farm track, as it’s easy to walk straight past it without noticing... and then it’s too late!! You’ll have to turn back.
From point 8 to 9... plenty of explanations, thank you... but it’s better to follow the map using the app
Best regards

Vague directions
Example: in point 6 of the description: at the first T-junction, turn left towards Follet. Cross a small bridge, and a little further on, before a second bridge spanning the Belle near the entrance to Follet, turn right onto a steeply ascending farm track.
Why not say: After crossing the small bridge, turn right onto a steeply ascending farm track, noting that further down lies the village of Follet and the River Belle

We’re definitely talking about the same crossroads.

On the Visorando website, I’ve posted a few routes in the Pays Mellois. There are some very pleasant ones, and some with quite a few points of interest. Do feel free to explore them – that’s what they’re there for. They’re the result of group hikes and personal discoveries based on map reading. In this case, the paths are usually unmarked.

Happy hiking.

Hello,
Thank you for your very quick reply; I think we’re talking about the same junction! (Coming from the D948 along the wind turbines, at the start of the Route de Vée de Melle with containers nearby). At the entrance to Negressauve.
My comment about the tarmac referred to the proposed alternative route towards Verrines-sous-Celles.
Last Thursday, I had the chance to take part in the ‘Around La Belle’ walk… absolutely brilliant!
I’m also planning to take part in another of your walks soon (on 8 December): ‘Sources and wash houses of La Belle’.
Kind regards.

Hello,

I’m surprised by your comment regarding the parking area. I personally took a group of nearly 230 people there, and we parked 6 or 7 cars off the road without posing any danger to anyone. The junction is large and very open, and the angle of the roads allows cars to be parked in a staggered formation away from the traffic flow.

For this walk, there are sections on very quiet minor roads, most of which are actually old farm tracks that have, unfortunately, now been tarmac-surfaced.

I suggest another walk in the same area, “Around La Belle de Montigné to Verrines-sur-Celles”, which is 9 km long with an elevation gain of around 65 metres. This route, which I also designed, starts from Montigné with parking available in a small square opposite the school (on the other side of the road).
There is also the walk published by the Deux-Sèvres Hiking Federation, which starts from Verrines (parking above the church).

Kind regards

It is not sensible to have several vehicles parked at the planned starting point for this hike.
The comments made by the hiker on 12 December 2016 should be taken into account, and the starting point at the town hall and church in Verrines-sous-Celles should be preferred.
This walk needs to be re-routed – however, between Negressauve and Verrines, there is a lot of tarmac, which adds quite a bit to the route (+2 km), but perhaps there are some shortcuts?
I’m planning to do this walk with a group on 17 November and would welcome any suggestions.....

A lovely walk with very little tarmac. Well worth doing again.

At point 3, do not turn left (it’s a busy road with nothing of interest and narrow verges), but turn right and then left twice to reach Le Luc via the small country lane, which is much more pleasant. Once in Le Luc, take the first left to rejoin the route just above point 4.
I started the route at the church in Verrines, crossed La Belle and turned right onto the path towards Follet to rejoin the route.
On the way back, after point 5, instead of turning right towards point 6, I turned left towards the church at Verrines, immediately after the small private cemetery on the left.
