In the Mervent forest along the Vendée

After exploring the Mervent National Forest, a lesser-known but slightly wilder route along the Mervent dam reservoir. Let's set off to explore the banks of the Vendée, passing by the Fontaine à l'Ermite, the Balingue and the Sauvaget site. Quite a programme.

Description of the walk

To reach the starting point of this hike, take the D938 at the exit of Fontenay-le-Comte towards La Châtaigneraie. Go through the village of Pissote and at the first roundabout at the bottom of a hill, turn right towards the Mervent Dam. You will immediately enter the forest and 1 km after the roundabout, you will arrive at the famous Rond-Point de Saint-Luc, known throughout the area. Park in the car park.

(S/E) Take the road to the Mervent Dam (signposted), which is one-way for cars. The road descends rapidly towards the dam, which you cross. Continue along the road, which climbs steeply with two hairpin bends for about 300 metres.

(1) Take the path on the left, which runs parallel to the road that continues to climb to the right. This path descends to the banks of the dam's reservoir. Turn right onto the path that runs along the left bank. From here, stay as close to the lake as possible.

(2) After about a kilometre, make a short detour to a peninsula.

(3) Pass the confluence of the Vendée and Mère rivers and continue along the path to Pont de Perrure, the first road bridge you come to, without taking any of the paths coming from the right. This path is sometimes steep in its second half, with a few rocky passages that are not particularly difficult.

(4) Do not cross the Pont de Perrure bridge, but take the road on the right for 200 metres to enter the forest on the right at a small car park via a small path.

(5) About 50 metres further on, at the first trail junction, turn left. The Fontaine à l'Ermite fountain is very close by, at the foot of a tree on the left (sign).
From the fountain, continue along the path which climbs slightly, running parallel to the road. Ignore the two small paths on the left which join the road and continue climbing until you reach a path junction.

(6) Take the small path on the left to join the D65 road. Continue along the left-hand side of the road with caution, ignoring the first road on the right near a forest house (the Balingue forest road leading to the dam) and arriving at the La Balingue crossroads.

(7) La Balingue crossroads: there is a bakery and pastry shop on the left at the crossroads with tables available for customers. The water tower is clearly visible on the other side.
Walk past the bakery and take the wide path at the end of the car park on the left. Continue along this wide path and ignore the first lane on the left.

(8) Take the first path on the right. Walk along the boundary wall of the Château du Mazeau, which can be seen on the left through the ruins of the wall. Join the D65 departmental road.

(9) Cross the road carefully, follow it to the left for about 50 metres, then take the first path on the right, which leads to a small forest road further on.

(10) Turn left onto this road, leaving the large, beautiful driveway leading to Puy Chabot (the former hunting lodge of the Chabot family) on your right a little further on, then continue straight ahead at the next crossroads, leaving the road to the village of Orbrie on your left. Pass a large pylon on your left.

(11) Take the first road on the right before the first houses. Continue along this road which descends to the Vendée, turn right along the river to reach the Sauvaget footbridge.

(12) Cross the recently restored footbridge and follow the river on the right-hand side along a wide path that becomes a small road. Fishing areas on the left. Arrive at a car park.

(13) Just before the car park entrance, take the path on the right which climbs up to the hamlet of Saint-Luc.

(14) This will take you to the road that passes in front of the Saint-Luc forest house and leads straight to the arrival car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Saint-Luc roundabout, well known to lovers of the massif and the starting point for many walks.

The Mervent or Saint-Luc dam, built in 1956 and inaugurated in 1958. It is the only class A dam in the Vendée, meaning it is over 20 metres high.

The Hermit's Fountain. There is another fountain near the cave of Louis Marie Grignon de Montfort.

The La Balingue water tower: nothing original in itself, but it is the second to be built on this site, as the first collapsed in 1957 (it was connected to the newly built Mervent dam) and one of the engineers was Guy Béart, before he became famous for his songs.

Opposite the water tower is La Lutine, a bakery well known for its brioches and... its préfou (with garlic, of course).

Passage near the Château du Mazeau along the surrounding wall.

The Sauvaget footbridge over the Vendée.

The first part along the Vendée coast is quite challenging, with elevation changes, rocks, fallen trees, and narrow passages near the water with drops below.
The second part is easier in the countryside.
A very beautiful hike that I completed in 3 hours and 50 minutes

Very enjoyable hike. Beautiful scenery throughout the route. Best done in dry weather as the start of the route is rocky in places (sometimes requiring climbing).
Worth doing again! 🙂

We went on this superb hike (16.820 km according to the GPS watch). Varied landscapes. Be careful on some steep sections along the Vendée (good hiking boots recommended). Yellow markings number 4, then number 6, then number 4 again. Overall, the hike is well marked, but it's still best to have the GPS track with you because some of the junctions are not obvious. Very little used, we only met three other hikers, but it's true that it's not suitable for everyone. There are steep sections, which are slippery in places due to humidity, and a number of trees blocking the trail... But we highly recommend it. It really doesn't feel like you're in the Vendée.

Hello
In fact, the description is misleading: taking the road in the wrong direction means you start the hike at the end
and the narrow paths are poorly marked. However, it is a superb walk and we avoided getting lost by using the Visorando GPS.
Conti nuez is great in any case.

Thank you for this review. It's true that the route around the reservoir isn't flat in the second half; you have to move away from the water in places and some of the hills are very steep. That's part of the charm of hiking!

The route was clearly explained from the outset, which is not always the case. When we took a wrong turn, the map helped us find our way back.
We did this hike in good conditions: dry and mild weather. The lake was full, so there were beautiful landscapes and pleasant paths.
However, don't expect a flat walk around the lake! Some sections are particularly steep.
Thank you for this hiking suggestion!

This walk along Lake Mervent can be tricky due to passages that, when wet, require extra care to ensure your safety.
Currently, two fallen trees in the same area are making progress difficult.

Very beautiful hike
In terms of difficulty, I think it would be good to add Medium++, especially for the first part between points 1 and 3, which for me is definitely the most beautiful part of this hike. Many sections can be a bit tricky for some people, with fairly high rocks that can be very slippery in wet weather, as was the case. We also noticed many fallen trees blocking the path, which forced us to contort ourselves a bit.
The directions between points 8 and 9 remain a little confusing; it is not always clear which way to turn at certain junctions.
Nevertheless, we enjoyed it and I plan to show it to my friends.

A superb hike this Friday under a warm sun, we were able to fully enjoy this shaded route. I particularly recommend it at this time of year.
