Description of the walk

To get to the start, from Fontenay-Le-Comte, head towards La Châtaigneraie (D938T). At the roundabout after Pissotte, turn right towards the Mervent Dam and continue to the Saint-Luc roundabout about 1 km away.

(S/E) Turn left onto Allée du Palleneau. Cross the D99 and continue along Allée de Puy Brunet until you reach the Rond-Point des Minières roundabout.

(1) Cross the Route Forestière de Fourchaud and continue along Allée de la Jaubretière until you reach the Y-junction.

(2) Turn right onto theGR® de Pays. A little further on, turn left to continue along the path overlooking the Ruisseau des Vergnes, then turn right and follow the reservoir. Join the road to reach the Barrage de Pierre Brune.

(3) Do not cross the dam, but climb the steps in the bend to reach the Grotte du Père de Montfort. Finish the climb via wooden steps to reach the calvary located at the edge of a large car park. Continue along the Allée de la Grotte to the crossroads.

(4) Turn left. The road descends, runs alongside the Pierre Brune Leisure Park and joins La Mère. Follow the dirt track to the right until you reach the Diet Bridge.

(5) Take the road to the right and, after about 200 metres, turn left onto the small road that descends, crosses a stream and climbs back up towards the houses of Diet.

(6) Leave the small road before the houses and turn right onto the path that climbs into the forest. A little further on, the path follows a ditch that may be wet in rainy weather. In this case, walk alongside it as you climb into the woods.

(7) Cross the road and continue straight ahead on theGR® de Pays trail marked in yellow and red.

(8) Cross the road and cycle path and continue on theGR® de Pays de Mélusine. The path descends, fords a small stream, then turns right and runs alongside the Mervent Dam reservoir, which can be seen through the branches of the trees. Further on, the path widens and begins to climb alongside a small stream. After a sharp left turn, then a right turn, the path joins the Rond-Point de Saint-Luc (S/E).

Hike completed without any particular difficulty.
The trail begins with long, wide forest paths, narrowing into a track and then a small path winding along the hillside before arriving at the Mervent dam.
Direct access to the Père Monfort cave was blocked by a municipal order: a tree was in danger of falling.
However, you can still reach it by taking a slight detour.
The geolocation is not very accurate and you may sometimes stray from the route marked in red on the map. If this happens, you will soon realise that there is no alternative to the path you are on.

A very beautiful hike with stunning scenery. The detour via the Mervent dam is well worth it.
However, without a map, it's difficult to find your way around. The signage needs to be improved.

A very pleasant walk with beautiful scenery, mainly through woodland, with perhaps only 200 metres of tarmac, accessible to all. When we did it, the paths were flooded or very muddy, so wear high-top shoes and gaiters if possible.

A very beautiful hike. Be sure to follow the written signs and not just the markings, as you need to follow several markings at once. However, there are fallen trees on the path, so you will need to climb over them.
