Park in the car park opposite the Al Poggio en Piovere bar-restaurant. Piovere di Tignale is a small but very pretty village perched at 390m above sea level.
(S/E) Turn right onto Via Antonio Gramsci and walk downhill to Piazza Chiara d’Assisi, where you’ll come to Via San Marco. Turn right and follow the road through the village until you reach a small square.
(1) Turn left onto Via Chiesa, which will take you to the steps of the Church of San Marco, where the church’s gilded altar and 16th-century paintings are well worth seeing. Then go down the steps and turn left onto Via Gargnano. At first, you’ll walk along Via Gargnano between the houses for 100 metres. Once you’ve passed the houses, the road becomes a path and you’ll be surrounded by olive trees and oleanders, with views of the lake.
(2) Look out for a sign on the wall on your right indicating trail no. 265 BVG towards Muslone. Follow this sign and take the path on the right. This path runs through open woodland, with views of Lake Garda always to your left. The path is well-marked and easy to follow, and the vegetation varies with the altitude. You’ll find cedars, native trees such as beech, chestnut, oak and common hornbeam, as well as firs and pines. Follow the path to the Via Antica.
(3) Follow the Via Antica and walk through the small village of Muslone, a secluded but very beautiful village with spectacular views.
(4) Turn right onto Via Muslone, towards Gargnano, and walk for about 200 metres.
(5) Take path no. 265 on your left, which will lead you to Gargnano. The path runs through the woods but is very easy. You’ll cross Via Muslone several times before rejoining it further down.
(6) Turn right onto this road and head back into the woods.
(7) Leave the road and follow the path on the right; head straight down and you’ll come out onto Via Muslone again. Follow the road to the right for a good hundred metres.
(8) Be careful: turn left onto Via Crocefisso and continue straight down until you reach Via Repubblica just before Gargnano Cathedral, which will be on your left.
(9) Turn right, walk past the cathedral and then cross the road (there’s a traffic light). Head downhill to the left along Via Parrocchia, then continue along Via Teatro.
(10) After a break in Gargnano, turn left onto Via San Martino, continue along Via Rimembranza – which passes in front of Villa Feltrinelli – then follow Via San Giacomo. This is the only road that crosses the village heading north-east.
(11) Stay on the main road and do the same at the next two junctions to rejoin Via Repubblica further up.
(12) Turn right, pass the power station to reach the tunnels.
(13) At the galleries, turn left and continue along the partly tarmacked road that runs above them. You’ll once again find yourself alone, in close contact with nature. On the road as it climbs, there are houses and a chapel; carry on until you reach a large stone house.
(14) Take care. Turn left onto path no. 263, which will take you to Piovere. The path is very easy, once again through woodland opening out to the right onto the lake. Join Via Gargnano.
(2) Carry on straight ahead, then turn left onto Via Chiesa.
(1) Turn right onto Via San Marco and carry on to Piazza Chiara d’Assisi. Then turn left onto Via Antonio Gramsci to return to the car park (S/E).
