Description of the walk

(S) Start from the Refuge de Mariailles. Head due south.

(1) Crossroads of tracks and paths (1718 m). Turn left towards the spring, leaving the pastoral refuge and the few tables and benches on your left. Follow the red and white markings ofthe GR®®10. Cross the Ruisseau de la Llipodère (1686 m). The path now heads due east. Pass the Ravin des Sept Hommes (1,840 m). Pass through three metal gates and arrive at the Col Vert (1,861 m).

(2) Continue on theGR®®10.

(3) Cross the Cady stream at the ford (1964 m). Caution: Tricky spot in wet weather. The path now heads north-west, climbing more steeply.

(4) Junction (altitude 2017). Turn left, following theGR®®10, marked in red and white.
Leave the path on your right that leads to the Arago Refuge and takes you up the Canigou via the ‘Cheminée’.
The path now heads due north, becomes paved for a few hundred metres and remains almost level. Pass the Mollèra Llarga valley. The path turns due west and enters the forest.

(5) Junction (altitude 2040m). Col de Segalès. Turn right, north-east, onto the path which climbs slightly.
Do not descend towards the Cabane de Moura.
Pass the altitudes 2072 and 2122. The path descends slightly and arrives at the Col de la Jasse d’en Vernet (2040 m).

(6) The path heads due east, descending slightly. Take care on some steep sections.
Pass the altitude of 1957 and the Roc dels Isards ravine (1911 m). Take care, as the path is in poor condition in places. Join a track (Lassa del Py). This is an avalanche-prone area where numerous avalanche barriers have been erected. Continue along the track, which descends slightly. The refuge comes into view.

(7) Bonne Aigue refuge, in a sorry state (altitude 1746m). Follow the track, which now heads due east, for 100m and, at the fork, turn right up a steep slope. Leave the track. Continue to follow the red and white markings ofthe GR®®10. The path climbs steeply through the forest and then opens out onto a large mountain pasture with a hut in sight.

(8) La Castella mountain hut (altitude 1936m). Continue on theGR®®10. Pass the 2009m altitude. At the 2067m altitude, on the spur, the path heads due east, continuing to climb less steeply. Pass the Fontaine de La Perdrix, which is often dry (2253m).

(9) Fork in the path. Turn left onto theGR®®10. The refuge comes into view after a few metres.
Leave the classic path leading up to Canigou on your right.
Descend along a wide path that has been repaired following overuse of the area. Pass the 2164-metre altitude, with a pond on your right. Follow the red and white markings to reach the Refuge des Cortalets (2150 m) (E).

I did this route on 6 September 2021 with a group of eight people. It was oursecond stage of the Teour du Canigou.
A very beautiful route, partly along paths and through woodland at the foot of Canigou, ending with a climb that seemed endless in the heat!
This somewhat long route offers a variety of views over the Canigou massif and its absolutely magnificent valleys.
However, it is quite challenging for average walkers.
