From Père Antoine to Saint-Paterne through the Eawy Forest

A three-hour walk amongst the tall beech trees. The route passes two landmarks typical of the Eawy Forest: a remarkable beech tree, known as the ‘Hêtre du Père Antoine’, and a pond, the ‘Mare de Saint-Paterne’. An easy route in all seasons, as the off-track alternative has no muddy sections.

Description of the walk

Take the D22 departmental road, which links the village of Grandes-Ventes to the D154 departmental road. Head for the Enclave forest road, which is on the D22 about 2 km south of the village of Grandes-Ventes.

(S/E) Start at the foot of Père Antoine’s beech tree. Take a moment to admire this remarkable tree. Leave the Enclave Forest Road by heading down the Grandes-Ventes Forest Road.

(1) Forest road junction. Continue straight ahead, still on the Route Forestière des Grandes-Ventes, then follow it uphill.

(2) Once you reach the Route Forestière des Limousins, take it by turning left.

(3) When you reach the Sainte-Paterne pond, take a moment to admire this characteristic feature of the Eawy Forest. Turn right in front of the pond (south-west).

(4) At the junction with the Route Forestière du Grand Maître, take this road by turning right.

(5) At the Réformation crossroads (elevation 178), take thefirst road on the right (north-east). Be careful not to head due north.

(2) Back at this junction, cross it and continue in the same direction along a poorly marked path. This is more off-track than a marked trail. Head in this same direction and keep going until you reach the edge of the forest.

(6) Halfway to the edge of the forest, carry on without changing direction (turning left is a ‘trap’).

(7) When you reach the edge of the forest, turn left onto the Route Forestière Cotta (North).

(8) At the junction at the corner of the meadow, turn left onto the Route Forestière des Six Frères.

(1) Join the Route des Grandes-Ventes at its lowest altitude (115) and turn right to head back up to the Hêtre du Père Antoine (S/E).

A walk taken on a sunny day at 30°C in a very shady setting, which made it very pleasant. The forest is beautiful.
There’s a short stretch of unpaved road at the start and end. The vast majority of the route follows forest tracks, which are a bit monotonous. The off-track section is very pleasant, but be careful at the starting point as we came across a fence marking a reforestation area and the path is overgrown. At the crossroads, don’t go straight ahead; instead, look to the left for what looks like a path.
We spotted a doe on the off-track section.

Thank you, Papy Diouf, for that lovely comment. Yes, it’s true that the undergrowth in Eawy Forest isn’t always easy to navigate off the beaten track!

A lovely route with two levels of physical difficulty,
The ‘off-track’ section is manageable for those who aren’t afraid of walking through brambles! Not recommended for the elderly or young children
