From the Rochers de Païolive to the resurgences of the Ruisseau de Granzon

This unmarked route, which sometimes even leaves the trails, requires an IGN map and GPS, and leads to remote and wild areas of the Bois de Païolive and the upper part of the Ruisseau du Granzon.

Description of the walk

Arriving from Les Vans via the D901 (towards Saint-Paul-le-Jeune), after reaching the plateau, at the end of a straight stretch, take the D252 (towards Maison Neuve) on the left. The Ours et du Lion car park is about 200m on the right (the first car park).

(S/E) At the end of the car park (signposted "L'Ours et Le Lion"), a path leads off to the left, uphill towards the south. At the large rocks, keep to the right and continue south, then descend into a rocky area. You will arrive at the Merveilles crossroads.

(1) Continue straight ahead at the crossroads. At the next T-junction, ignore the right-hand branch to the west which joins the D901 and the left-hand branch to the east which goes into the woods. Continue straight ahead on the path shown on the IGN map (but not on OpenStreetMap), which is not visible. Make your way in this southerly direction using your GPS (the undergrowth is not too thick).

Further on, a little to the right, you will find a track to follow to the left and south, parallel to the D901 (traffic visible and audible). The trail widens. Keep right at a crossroads, then left at a three-way junction where a mountain bike trail marker in the opposite direction is visible. You will come to a junction with a carriage road at an elevation of 199 metres.

(2) Continue straight ahead and keep right at the next three-way junction. At another three-way junction, follow the small path on the left. There is a collapsed dolmen at the next crossroads on the right-hand corner. Continue straight ahead and cross a field. At the entrance to the hamlet of La Lauze, pass between two buildings and take the street in the hamlet. Cross a road, continue straight ahead and turn left at the end of the street, then join the D202.

(3) Take the D202 on the right, follow it along the Granzon, cross the bridge and arrive at the junction with the D901 (Domaine des Lèbres).

(4) Cross the D901 and take the field path almost opposite. Leave a path on your right and continue straight ahead on the path, which curves widely to head north again. Continue straight ahead past the wooden hut and then the large crossroads. You will arrive at the submersible bridge over the Granzon (with a double row of limestone blocks on its left, probably the remains of old fords or submersible bridges).

(5) Take a wide path uphill, leaving the gate to Mas du Granzon on your left, and continue uphill until you reach a path on the left (signposted as a discovery trail). Follow this path, which climbs above the Granzon on its left bank and passes close to the left of the Résurgence de la Grille.

(6) The path then descends almost to the stream bed, heads north, crosses the stream and follows a series of meanders to the west on the right bank. After the Fontaine du Vedel, continue along the stream bed until you reach theGR®® 44 A (clearly visible red and white markings).

(7) Take theGR®® on the right uphill. You will come to a field of olive trees on the left and continue to the road.

(8) Take the road on the right and continue to a crossroads with a triangular traffic island (elevation 259).

(9) Take the road on the left, turn right downhill before a gate with several letterboxes. Turn left again at the bottom at the entrance to some properties, then right at the next T-junction. A hundred metres after the end of a left-hand bend, just after the houses, between two dry stone walls, the start of a path is blocked (March 2019) by brambles.

(10) Walk along the field next to the north wall of the path. At the end of the field, the path becomes more passable between the two walls. It is cleared before a road. Continue along the track until you reach the D901.

(11) Follow the D901 on the right for a few dozen metres and turn left onto the D252 to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Alternative:
(10) If you are concerned about brambles but not a good dose of tarmac, continue straight on to the road, turn right, then right again to join the D901, which you follow south to (11) (caution, this road is very busy).

Do not do this hike in hot weather, especially in summer.

Do not do this hike in wet weather or after heavy rain, especially during Cévennes episodes.

Take water with you, as despite the springs, you cannot count on finding drinking water along the way.

Wear good footwear, as there are stony paths and the smooth limestone slabs of the Bois de Païolive and Ruisseau du Granzon can be slippery.

Pruning shears may be useful between (1) and (2), as well as between (10) and (11).
A GPS is recommended between (1) and (2). It can be replaced by a good sense of direction, observation of the environment and a good ability to read IGN maps. The GPX file corresponds to the actual hike.

For these reasons, I have classified this hike as difficult. However, it should not deter experienced hikers.

Worth a visit

If you are not familiar with the Bois de Païolive, start with the Sentier de la Vierge (next car park after L'Ours et du Lion, well-marked route), which is great for children, but under supervision!

There are many references to the Bois de Païolive available online, at the Vans Tourist Office, and in bookshops in Les Vans, such as the excellent "Païolive" published by Éditions La Fontaine de Siloé.

Two other routes on this site, Le Bois de Païolive and Autour de Païolive, will delight hikers.

On the route suggested here, start by admiring the rocks at the beginning. In the Granzon canyon, you can linger at the resurgences marked on the IGN map, or even others... This will significantly lengthen the journey time. In very dry weather (such as on 5 March 2019), it is possible to descend via a steep staircase (caution!) into the Résurgence de la Grille. At the bottom of the canyon, you need to stray slightly off the route to the right to approach the Fontaine du Vedel (visible from the path) and observe the old structures.

Shortly before reaching the bottom of the canyon, other structures are still clearly visible to the left of the trail on the right bank of the stream: a water retention basin, a water supply channel built of limestone slabs, and a dry stone building. These are traces of former agricultural activities and the use of springs for irrigation.

Beavers leave traces of cut trees and shrubs (with their characteristic bite marks). Spotting them will be more difficult...

Finally, the view of the Rocher de L'ours and the Rocher du Lion (see photo) will be the highlight of the hike; stand on the road to get a good view.

Instead of returning via Les Vans (although the hiker's rest at the bistro there is very tempting...), you can continue towards Maison Neuve for a last glimpse of the woodland crossing and then take the D104 for the return journey.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

The two of us completed this hike at the end of August 2025, which fortunately included quite a few shaded sections, except for the final 2.5 km of road. The "treasure hunt" between points 1 and 2 seems rather pointless to us, as regardless of the "orientation" aspect of this section, the undergrowth is so dense that we quickly turned back. So, at the T-junction, it is better to follow the path on the left (left in the direction of
normal progression), then fairly quickly turn right at the next crossroads, and you will soon find yourself back on the described route.
But this change in route due to the condition of the terrain is nothing compared to the end result!
Indeed, there are 2.5 km of small road between 8 and 10, which are not very pleasant for any hiker. But... the description of the hike (which dates back to 2019!) tells us "...between two dry stone walls, the start of a path is blocked (March 2019)
by brambles. Walk along the meadow... at the end of the meadow, the path becomes more passable... it is cleared before the road."
However, in 2025, the opposite is true. The start of the path is completely passable and karstic cave. Unfortunately, what follows is very difficult, and the recommended pruning shears would be completely ridiculous and useless, as we would need at least an electric hedge trimmer
for several dozen, even hundreds of metres! We even had to step onto private property on the right, then, in front of this thorny jungle, turn left to reach the D 901 as quickly as possible.
In short, this part of the route description should be completely removed and what is only optional in the guidebook should be made "mandatory"
continuing north along the road (at Combe de Mege), then turning right onto the road that joins the D901.
There, rather than taking the D 901 on the right for 1 km, which is a very busy and dangerous road with few hard shoulders, it is better to cut across the road and go straight ahead along the path (above the word Ygressière) to the crossroads marked 223 on the IGN map. There, take the path on the right to return to the Ours et Lion car park. This only adds 900 m to the initial planned distance. However, it does add 500 m of small road to the 2.5 km already planned.
In any case, this hike, which follows the Granzon river, is truly wild, even sublime, between 4 and 8. It's a shame that there is all this compulsory road in the end, which is why I only give this hike a 3 for interest.
I was also able to plot a completely different ending on my Openrunner app from point 8 (with more kilometres but less road). However, as I am neither from the region nor the author of this hike proposal, I cannot explain or validate it here.

This route should only be attempted if you have a GPS, as everyone follows their own trail through the woods and there are multiple paths, so it is impossible to rely on the description alone!
Otherwise, it's a very beautiful place, quite popular.

Hello E8sp3va?

It's a shame you weren't able to do the section between (6) and (7), which is very picturesque.
But it is indeed the type of hike to avoid in rainy weather. Come back when the weather is nice and don't be too disappointed by the completely different return trip on the plateau (passages on tarmac).

Best regards.

Hello, very pleasant walk, impeccable description and map route, checked from time to time with GPS, but like many hikers, we (two people) couldn't find the path between points 6 and 7.It was only 3 p.m., but it was already very dark, it had been raining for a while, and that's when we lost our GPS connection! So we turned back, as the rain had made it dangerous. But we really enjoyed the walk up to point 6 and we will definitely do this hike again, determined to finish it on a sunny day. Thank you, Mr Bonin.
Best regards

We hiked this route with a group of experienced hikers and three Visorando subscribers
, so we had three GPS devices. The start was fine, but then at point two, where you leave the Paîolive woods, and up to point eleven, the trail was sometimes inaccessible, forcing us to cross private property. There were no traces of the trail and three quarters of the route was on tarmac.
I don't understand the reviews I've read about this hike.
We hike with maps and GPS.
You have to go there to see the condition of this trail for yourself.

Hello, pujaulain,

It's true that other hikers have had difficulties. I responded to this by providing further details. Did you consult them when planning your hike? That's why I classified the hike as difficult.

Other hikers have a very different point of view from yours, and do not recommend removing this hike from the map. It's just that you shouldn't venture into the Bois de Païolive lightly. I don't see that you mentioned using an IGN map, the Visorando app or any other GPS tool. Did you read the "Practical Information" section carefully?

Best regards.

We went hiking with a group of ten hikers, starting from the Ours et du Lion car park. So far, so good.
After 500 metres, the trail disappeared. In some places, the route crosses private property, and in others, the trail is no longer visible on the ground. Three-quarters of the route is on a tarmac road.
In short, this trail should be removed because it is impracticable and dangerous.

A beautiful hike through varied landscapes: the Païolive woods and rocks, the Ardèche vineyards at the foot of the beautiful Château de Banne, and the wild Granzon valley. Best done in spring, when the Granzon has a little water.
Please note: the path marked (10) is overgrown — you'll need a brush cutter rather than secateurs! Unfortunately, I have to recommend taking the road instead.

The start was quite chaotic (normal in Païolive!).
Without GPS, I arrived at a small cairn. Thinking I was at the crossroads after point 1 (but I think I was a little further west), I tried to go straight ahead into the bushes.
I quickly gave up and joined the D901, following it to the left. You soon come to a car park where there is a path on the
left leading to the three-way junction with mountain bike markings.
I returned there on the way back: at the cairn, it is better to turn left to quickly find the mountain bike trail, which you follow in the opposite direction.
The Granzon valley is magnificent and the path is relatively easy. Lovely frog concert.
At 10, the trail is still blocked, but with the map, you can get through without any problems.
A beautiful walk that I recommend to everyone.

Hello BIS,

Thank you for your response.
You simply classified as "impossible" what I classified as "difficult" ...
Between (10) and (11), the trail is indeed not cleared, which is a shame.
In the Merveilles area, my idea was precisely to avoid the road, which is often very busy and therefore not very pleasant. The OpenStreetMap hiking guide indicates that it is possible to turn left instead of following the road for about 200 metres to find a path on the right that leads back to the route (to be verified).
On 4 March, with a group of a dozen hikers, we managed to pass straight through without losing anyone .

Best regards.
