From the banks of the Guisane to the heights of Saint-Chaffrey

This lovely walk showcases two remarkable features of Saint-Chaffrey: a cool path along the Torrent de la Guisane and its canal, followed by a tour of the hamlets of Chantemerle, Villard Laté and La Villette. Beautiful views of the valley and surrounding mountains complete this walk.

Description of the walk

From Briançon, continue on the national road towards Col du Lautaret. At the roundabout, turn right towards Saint-Chaffrey. Once in Saint-Chaffrey, park in the small car park on Rue de Barmoire or in one of the other car parks in the village. The hike starts just before the fountain.

(S/E) Turn right onto Rue des Aillauds, which will take you to the river. When you reach an intersection,

(1) Turn left, go under the national road bridge and continue along this road until you reach the Torrent du Grand Verdarel and its junction.

(2) Go straight ahead, cross the Guisane and take the first path on your left at the sign for the Guisane trail. Walk along the Canal des Queyrelles, ignoring the small paths on your right. Further on, the path widens and becomes a downhill track. After two bends, you will pass the oratory dedicated to Notre-Dame des Neiges and Saint-Antoine just before reaching the Pont Pramorel.

(3) Cross this bridge and turn left towards the Sentier Guisane and the Pont Carle. Follow the left bank of the stream until you pass the municipal technical services building and rejoin the road you started on, which you will cross.

(2) Turn opposite, onto the path that will take you to Chantemerle, alternating between country lanes and the banks of the Guisane.

(4) Continue left on the paved road, then at the bridge, turn right to join Rue de la Grande Charrière, which you will follow to the right, then immediately right and continue straight ahead until you reach the national road.

(5) Cross it carefully and continue on Chemin des Carines. At the end of the road, continue climbing, crossing Route du Granon at Villard Laté.

(6) Turn right onto Chemin des Clos to begin your return to Saint-Chaffrey. Stay on this path until you reach the signpost for "Eyrette et ruines".

(7) Continue straight ahead towards Saint-Chaffrey. Shortly before reaching the hamlet of La Villette, the path turns into a paved road. Continue straight ahead until you reach a fork.

(8) Turn right onto Chemin de l'Ascension and follow it to the crossroads with Rue du Pont Levis at the end.

(9) Turn right, cross the Pont-levis and join Rue Barmoire on the left and the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

  • Admire the oratory dating from 1823 (currently undergoing renovation).
  • the drawbridge, which raises the road in case of flooding

Pleasant walk along the Guisane river. The section between 5 and 6, on the road to Villard Laté, is difficult when it is hot. In Villard Laté, before taking the Chemin des Clos, take a detour to the small square (blue chapel and sundial). Beautiful views of the Serre Chevalier valley from St Chaffrey to Briançon
