From Saint-Pierre-de-Rivière to Saint-Martin-de-Caralp

An easy hike with beautiful views of the Pyrenees. No difficulty apart from some old markings or sections overlapping local routes, and a section requiring GPS guidance at the point (8).

Description of the walk

Saint-Pierre de Rivière is divided into two parts: Saint-Pierre de Dessous, along the D17, and Saint-Pierre de Dessus, along the D11a. Park in the small car park at Saint-Pierre de Dessous.

(S/E) Follow the D11a up towards Saint-Pierre de dessus. Pass a wash house on the right.

(1) Ignore the Route de Fouchard on the right, which you will take on the way back, and continue straight on for a good kilometre.

(2) Pass an “extraordinary garden” on the left, brightened by numerous stone statues, then take thesecond dirt track on the left. Follow it across a small stream via a log bridge, then uphill to a crossroads.

(3) Leave the hamlet of Lux on your left and take the path on the right.

(4) As you come within sight of the hamlet of Gayet, take a path to the right: it runs alongside a shed on your right and appears to follow the left-hand side of a field before becoming a distinct path. Initially descending, it then climbs back up towards Sarret.

(5) On reaching Sarret (you may wish to make a return trip to the hamlet), take the path on the right for 4 to 5 metres then turn immediately left. Descend quickly towards two small streams. After the second stream, the path climbs back up towards Ourdenac.

(6) Turn left onto the short stretch of tarmac road, pass a drinking fountain and continue to a fork. Leave the tarmac roads and head straight ahead onto a dirt track, between a house and a shed, called Impasse de la Scierie. Follow the track as it veers to the right and then to the left.

(7) A few metres before the end of the climb, turn right onto a path that runs above the D45, then veers slightly away from it.

(8) When you reach a hay dispenser, head sharply right then left, onto a path lined with rocks: a GPS is recommended here. Follow the most obvious track to reach the road. Follow it to Tresbens. At the junction in the hamlet, take the second road on the right (D45) for about 300 m.

(9) Turn left onto a lovely path leading to Saint-Martin-de-Caralp. Walk down into the village, past the church and the town hall. At the junction just after, make a quick right/left turn, leaving a drinking fountain on your left, and rejoin the D11a. Follow it to the left, then go straight on at the junction.

(10) Leave the D11a by turning left. Go straight on at the junction about a hundred metres further on and continue to a telecoms mast. Please note: on the IGN map, it is indicated that, after the hamlet of Le Curalou, theGRP® Tour de la Barguillère passes to the left via the Cantegril equestrian centre before joining the mast via a path. This route no longer exists on the ground, hence the need to take the tarmac road.

(11) Take the clearly marked path that runs diagonally in front of the mast. Follow it towards the hamlet of Fouchard.

(12) On reaching the hamlet, turn immediately left, going round a building to rejoin the route heading down towards Saint-Pierre de Dessus.

(13) At a flat area, leave the path going uphill on the left (not shown on the IGN map) and continue along the track opposite until you reach the Route de Fouchard. Continue left until you reach the junction of the circular route.

(1) Turn left and return to the starting car park (S/E).

A pleasant, easy walk. To avoid the section at point 8, after point 6 in Ourdenac we continued along the D45 road to St Martin de Caralp. From there, to make it a mid-mountain hike, we headed to Roc de Caralp. To follow this route, head to Col de Bouich, then take a short descent along the road for about 300 metres. Cross the D117 and take the wide path opposite, go past the electric fence and head up to the right into the forest. On leaving the woods, follow the clearly visible cairns to the summit of Roc de Caralp (739m) via a very pleasant path. Allow 1½ hours for the round trip. The view from the summit is magnificent. Head back down the same way to rejoin the main hiking route.

It feels more like the countryside than the mountains, even at an altitude of 600 metres. You can only see the foothills, not the peaks. The woods are completely unkempt; there are broken branches everywhere, dead or felled trees, and endless brambles. I was very disappointed: based on the reviews, I’d expected better. Sorry.

The section mentioned as tricky really is tricky! A GPS is essential. Otherwise, it’s a lovely walk in glorious sunshine.

A lovely walk, but the section after the sawmill wasn’t very clear and led to a tricky descent – the infamous point 8, which I won’t be taking when I do this walk with the club.

A lovely walk which, in my opinion, is much better signposted if you do it the other way round.
Note that at point 8, despite the signposts, we struggled to find the descent due to rather dense vegetation. The vegetation was very fragrant and a welcome relief in this heat.
A big thank you to “Randonneuse Michelle34” for discovering this route.
