From Landmannalaugar to Thorsmork in two stages

Landmannalaugar, a volcanic landscape par excellence, offers spectacular scenery with rugged relief. Close to active volcanoes, you can hear and smell the earth breathing, exhaling sulphurous fumes from its fumaroles, bubbling waters and hot mud. It's a complete change of scenery in a rugged, unspoilt and daring natural environment with an explosion of incredible colours. The Laugavegur trek, linking the base of Landmannalaugar to that of Thorsmork (Þórsmörk), is reputed to be the most beautiful in Iceland. It can be done in several stages, as there are plenty of campsites and refuges along the way.

Notes

The trek has six base camps combining campsites and refuges and can be completed in a maximum of five stages.
The crossing begins at Landmannalaugar, then Höskuldsskáli, Álftavatn, Hvanngil, Emstrur and ends at Thorsmork (Þórsmörk).

The shelters are expensive, although they do not provide meals or breakfast. Bring food for the number of days you plan to be out. Canned food and dry goods can only be purchased at the start in Landmannalaugar and on arrival in Thorsmork.

The climate in Iceland is harsh, with temperatures rarely rising above 15°C. Hikers should be equipped with appropriate clothing and footwear to cope with sudden changes in weather, frequent rainfall, fog and, above all, the unpleasant winds that blow almost daily and can sometimes be violent.

To cross the fords, bring hiking poles and plastic sandals, which are lightweight and dry quickly. When crossing large, turbulent fords, carry your backpack on one shoulder so that you can easily take it off. If you lose your balance and your backpack becomes waterlogged, it will be difficult to free yourself and you will be swept away by the waves, with a high risk of drowning. It is best to cross in the morning before the meltwater rises. Choose the widest crossing point, where the current is weaker, and proceed with caution, moving slightly upstream but without letting the water rise above your crotch, as you risk losing your balance.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.
