From Clugny Beach to Anse Tillet

A lovely walk along the rugged northern coast of Basse-Terre. The route, which mainly runs through woodland and connects some beautiful beaches, allows you to spend the hottest hours of the day in the shade.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Starting from Clugny Beach, head all the way to the left (facing the sea). Look for a small path that climbs up the cliff. Take a short detour to the right to enjoy the view of the whole of Clugny Beach and the cliffs beneath your feet. Return to the path and cross the car park.

(1) Take the clearly marked path on the right. Follow it and make the most of the clearly visible detours to get closer to the cliffs (take care) and enjoy the lovely views. The path is well marked; keep the sea on your right.

(2) As you approach the road, unfortunately this area used to be an illegal rubbish dump (watch your step). Continue along the path, which remains well-marked.

(3) Pass by Gros Cap, which offers a lovely view of the sea and the Îlet à Kahouane offshore. Carry on a little further to overlook Anse Tillet beach. After a short descent, head towards the beach to take a few steps and walk to the end to reach the car park (watch out for manchineel trees)

(4) From the car park, turn around, go behind the beach and walk up the small slope. Follow the same path as on the way there to Clugny Beach (S/E).

Notes

Wear sturdy shoes as it’s a narrow path, and you pass right beneath the road where there used to be an old illegal tip, so watch your step.

Worth a visit

Stunning views of the sea, the coastline and Îlet Kahouane. You can swim at the two beaches at either end of the trail, as well as at a smaller, harder-to-reach beach along the way.

The start and finish points are quite lovely, but the route itself—which runs below the road and is littered with all sorts of rubbish (tyres, glass bottles, etc.)—remains rather uninteresting.

The trail is currently in fair condition, with virtually no signposting.
Nevertheless, the walk is pleasant. You can go for a swim at Anse Tillet, a splendid spot, or on the way back at Clugny.

A lovely warm-up walk along the beaches to La Perle beach and back. Beautiful scenery.
The walk is well signposted with yellow markers.
