From Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s house to the Jacob and Grobelle waterfalls

A pleasant green walk in the hills, very close to the very centre of the Chambéry conurbation, allowing you to visit the home of the illustrious Jean-Jacques Rousseau and explore the Nant du Pontet streams. This walk takes you through the areas of Jacob-Bellecombette, Chambéry and Barberaz, and past the boundary of the municipality of Montagnole. Despite its proximity to the city, most of the route is through woods or across meadows.

Description of the walk

The walk starts from the small car park opposite the little church in Jacob-Bellecombette.

(S/E) Walk up Rue du Presbytère and Rue du Cimetière, then continue along the path opposite and onto Rue de l’Église. Turn right, head towards the Town Hall, pass the school and its fountain, then continue along the pretty path that runs alongside Route de Bellecombette. At the next junction in front of the houses on Rue Anne de Chypre, head towards the houses.

(1) Turn left onto Rue Anne de Chypre, walking between the houses to the end, then take the path leading into the Bois de la Culaz. Continue along the path through the woods heading east until you reach the new Roches Blanches housing estate. Walk alongside the communal allotments, then continue along the small path that leads down to Rue du Granier. Follow it downhill to Route des Entremonts.

(2) When you reach the road as you leave the Casson neighbourhood, cross it and take the road opposite, the Chemin des Rendez-Vous. A few metres past the entrance to the Résidence du Bois Joli, take the small path on the right that leads uphill. This leads to the Parc de l’Étincelle and is signposted. Once near the park, continue along the main path indicated, which leads to the Maison des Charmettes. After about ten minutes through woods that rise and fall, you will reach the Chemin des Charmettes.

(3) Turn left onto this road and follow it to Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s house, passing the tight bend for cars in the shade.

(4) After exploring this remarkable site, retrace your steps for a few minutes.

(3) Before the bend, take the small path on the left leading to Buisson Rond Park. This path heads back into the woods. Follow Chemin des Rochères, then turn right towards the south at the main signposted junction. This is theGR® trail known as the Sentier des Hauts de Chanaz. Follow this path through woods and meadows to Les Hauts de Chanaz, at a place called Les Grandes Teppes, which is near the Fontaine du Diez.

(5) Once you have passed the Ranch des Gentianes and reached the few houses in the hamlet, take the road on the right at the main crossroads, then the path that follows on from it. You will then arrive at Maisolée, then Combe Boutet and finally Les Charolinières, until you return to Bellecombette. Everything is signposted on the yellow hiking signs; it’s pretty much straight on until you reach the houses and then the Route des Entremonts.

(6) Back on the Route des Entremonts, head back towards the houses on the Route de Bellecombette opposite. Then turn left twice between the farms on the Chemin du Moulin. Cross the Ruisseau du Pontet via the pretty little bridge, then take the path on the right which runs alongside the river. Keep going straight on along the entire Chemin de la Grobelle, which runs alongside the river. After a while, the path climbs slightly towards the meadows and eventually reaches the pretty houses of the Sècheron district. Pass between the houses along the designated path until you reach the road leading up to Montagnole and Saint-Cassin via Cesoler.

(7) Turn right towards Chambéry and the centre of Jacob until you reach the first waterfall of the Nant du Pontet by the roadside.

(8) Once you reach the waterfall, take the path on the left, known as Le Sentier des Cascades. Follow the path as it winds its way through the woods, past the river and the waterfalls. Continue downwards without turning right onto the paths leading to the Corbelet buildings or the Eau Vive houses. Carry on straight through the woods until you reach the road to Saint-Cassin.

(9) Turn right onto the road, walk up through the neighbourhoods of central Jacob on either side of the Souris, keeping straight ahead past the Grand Pré Multi-Sport area. Once at Grand Pré, before reaching Chambéry, cross it via the informal path to return to the forecourt of the Church of Jacob-Bellecombette (S/E).

Notes

This long circular route partly follows several walks or hikes in the Chambéry area, notably No. 1: Les Hauts de Barberaz, No. 9: Le Chemin de Jean-Jacques Rousseau and No. 15: Le Sentier des Cascades.

Almost all the paths are very well signposted. The route is fairly shaded; only the start is a bit in the sun.

It takes about 3½ hours to complete the entire circular route (excluding a visit to Les Charmettes), so make sure you wear good walking shoes and bring water.

Most of the walk is through woods, across meadows and close to residential areas. Consequently, there are few places to get water (occasionally near farms in the hamlets). For other essentials (shopping, etc.), make sure you sort these out beforehand in the centre of Chambéry.

Worth a visit

(S/E) On the other side of the roundabout is the main entrance to the University of Savoie-Mont Blanc: the Chambéry campus (the main site of the University’s four locations, with two of the other three also in Chambéry (at Bourget-du-Lac in the heart of Technolac and in the city centre on Rue Marcoz) and thefourth on the heights of Annecy (Annecy-le-Vieux)).

(1) This is the ‘Jacob’ part of the commune of Jacob-Bellecombette.

(2) Continue for a little under a hundred metres along the Route des Entremonts towards the mountains to reach the bakery run by the two Desmoulin brothers (professional cyclists), which is a very pleasant spot for a sweet or savoury break. It is usually the starting point or the first refreshment stop for the brave souls who cycle up the Col du Granier.

(4) Take in the modest Charmettes house of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, whose small, bucolic and romantic garden offers a magnificent view over the whole of Chambéry and its valley. A visit to this home of Madame de Warens (his hostess) is well worth it.

Between (4) and (5) you follow theGR®9andGR®96long-distance hiking trails. TheGR®9links Grenoble and Chambéry via the Chartreuse massif to the south. TheGR®96links Chambéry and Samoëns, crossing the Bauges massif further to the north/north-east.

(6) This is the “Bellecombette” section of the municipality of Jacob-Bellecombette and the start of the waterfall trail.

With the first frosts of winter and a little snow on the ground, this is a pleasant hike that is very easy to access from Chambery. It takes about 2½ hours at a brisk pace.

• A lovely hike we did on the same half-day as HRF, whom we probably bumped into!
• We did the hike in the opposite direction so that we could start with the waterfalls on the way up.
• We were pleasantly surprised to find that we were practically always surrounded by nature, even though we were in an urbanised area.
• The route only started to get busy from 11 o’clock in the morning, and it wasn’t a bother at all.

A very pleasant walk combining woodland, paths and a stroll through residential areas, offering the chance to discover a number of places around Chambéry that can be explored on your own.
Description is fine, but please note that the path leading to the Bois de la Culaz is no longer accessible (brambles, tree trunks, etc.) from the turning area (see map). Simply walk down for about twenty metres along the edge of the woods, where there is another entrance.
Thanks for this lovely route!

Hike taken on 22 August in the late afternoon. It was a lovely way to round off the day with a visit to Les Charmettes before closing time (6.00 pm).
3½ hours in total, including the visit.
The route is easy to follow and the waterfall site is truly incredible, just a stone’s throw from the town.

Lots of motorway / urban sections.
Only worth a visit if you’re near Chambéry.
JJ Rousseau’s house is worth a visit.

The route was very quiet on the day we went, but it must be busy on other days as it runs through the Chambéry conurbation.
