From Camaret to Camaret via Pointe de Pen Hir

This third stage of the Crozon circuit is short but well worth spending time on. It offers superb sea views, culminating in the high cliffs of Pointe de Pen Hir and the Tas de Pois. There is also a wealth of heritage to discover: a chapel, the Vauban Tower and old military structures, rows of menhirs, and the remains of a manor house...

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Le tour (ou presque) de la Presqu'Ile de Crozon

Description of the walk

Start from the Jim Sévellec esplanade, at the beginning of the jetty leading to the Vauban Tower.

No signposting

(S) For those who wish, take the jetty towards the Vauban Tower. Pass the Notre-Dame de Rocamadour Chapel and then walk around the Vauban Tower. Return to the starting point.

Red and white markings

(S) Take the Jim Sévellec Esplanade and walk along the beach on your right. Pass through a wooden gate and follow the coastal path. At a T-junction, turn right. At a fork, keep left. At the next junction, turn right and walk along a wall on your left. At the T-junction, turn right. Do the same at the next one.

(1) Go round an old fort on the left and head uphill. Then follow the coastal path along the heights (superb views). At a fork, turn right.

(2) As you reach a road, turn right to stay on the coastal path. Follow the small road you left earlier and, when it turns left, veer right onto a path. Climb a steep slope covered in small rocks, then make a circular route to the left. Descend among the rocks. At the next two forks, take the path on the right. Follow the ramparts of the Toulinguet Semaphore and reach its gate.

(3) Cross the tarmac area, go through a gate and immediately turn left onto a path. Cross a path running perpendicular to this and descend along a stony path towards Pen Hat Beach, which is clearly visible. You will arrive at the beach car park.

(4) Turn right, go through a gate and immediately turn left onto the coastal path. Walk along the beach below on your right and note the ruins of the Manoir de Cœcilian high up on your left. Then climb up to reach the top of the cliffs (large houses). At the top, follow the path to the right, pass a few bunkers and arrive at the Battle of the Atlantic Memorial (a row of anchors from old warships).

(5) Continue along the path lined with ropes. At a fork, turn right towards a large, clearly visible Lorraine cross. At the foot of the cross, turn left and follow the path to Pointe de Pen Hir (orientation table).

(6) Turn almost completely round and head north again along the coastal path. At a fork, turn right. Stay on top of the cliff and ignore the vague paths branching off to the sides. At a clearly marked fork, take the path on the right which descends towards Veryac’h beach (ignore an old signpost directing you to the left). Cross the beach car park and pass a bar-crêperie on the left.

No signposting

(7) At the beach access point (red buoy), take a wide path on the left (MTB signposted). Shortly afterwards (meadow gate), turn right onto a shaded path. Climb gently up a small valley (stream on the right). Ignore a path on the right, cross a stream via a footbridge. Come out onto a small road and follow it to the right for a few dozen metres.

(8) Just before a lodge, turn left onto a path. At the junction immediately ahead (not shown on the map), turn left. Pass a wash house and follow a path between two hedges. At the end, follow a small road to the right. Turn right again at the next junction and cross a residential area. At the Stop sign, turn right.

(9) At the crossroads that appears immediately, take a path that leads diagonally to the left towards the Lagatjar menhir alignments. Cross diagonally to the left through a quadrangle marked out by rows of menhirs. At the end, cross a road, go through a gate and follow a path to the ruins of the Manoir de Cœcilian.

(10) Go round the manor house on the right and, at the break in the slope, turn right and stay on level ground (do not go down towards Pen Hat beach). Keep heading north-north-east, stay on a well-marked path and ignore the side tracks. You will come out onto a small road; follow it to the right for a few dozen metres and return to a junction you passed on the way out.

(2) Turn right onto a grassy track (gate). At the end, go through a second gate, cross a road and follow Rue de Grouanoch straight ahead. Keep going straight down the hill, ignoring all the side streets, and walk past a campsite on your right.

(11) At the stop sign, cross Rue du Général Leclerc, continue straight on into Rue Maurice Mathey and walk past a school on your right. At the end, turn left then immediately right. Turn left straight away and go down Rue de la Somme. Cross a street on the right-hand side and continue along Rue de la Somme. At the bottom, turn right. Shortly afterwards, turn sharply left into a narrow lane. Cross a small square, continue straight on to the port of Camaret.

(12) Depending on where you are staying (or where you have parked for a day hike), follow the quay to the left to reach a hotel, or to the right as shown on the map to reach the Léo Lagrange Water Sports Centre (E).

Notes

Equipment:
Hiking boots required. Rain gear: rain cape, rucksack cover, etc. Sun protection depending on the season and your skin sensitivity. Hikers using walking poles are asked to use poles with rubber tips to avoid damaging the coastal paths.

Route and guidance:
- Please respect the ropes marking the edges of the paths, which are there either to protect a sensitive natural environment or for safety reasons.
- Pointe de Pen Hir (6) and its surroundings feature steep cliffs: take great care.
- Between (S) and (7), the red and white markings ofthe GR®®34are present at major junctions but are rather scarce on the coastal paths where the route is straightforward, if not obvious. The section between (10) and (2) requires a good sense of direction.

Resources along the way:
No water points identified along the route.
Supermarket in Camaret, Rue du Loc'h, near (E).
Numerous bars and restaurants along the quays in Camaret, between (S) and (E).

Accommodation on arrival (E):
- Léon Lagrange Youth Hostel / Water Sports Centre, Quai Téphany (E). Bookings by telephone (02 98 27 90 49) or by email (info@club-leo-camaret.fr).
- Several hotels, which can be found in the Yellow Pages or using your favourite search engine.

On 11 December, we encountered few people on this route.
We used the Visorando app, and the route seemed easy to follow.
One tricky spot in this rainy winter is the path between Kermeur and Kerbonn (after point 8), which has turned into a small stream! You will get your feet wet in 3 to 5 cm of water. An alternative route might be to take point 7 via Pen-Hir then Kerbonn, and don't miss the Lagadjar alignments and the Manoir de Saint Pol Roux, both of which are worth a detour.

Otherwise, this hike is magnificent, with exceptional views even in overcast weather.
I highly recommend it!

A beautiful hike, especially in the first part, with magnificent landscapes and views.
I was lucky to have very favourable weather, so no slipping!
The hike is not particularly difficult, except for the numerous rocks (good footwear is essential).

A very beautiful hike with splendid scenery towards the Pointe de Pen Hir. Good footwear is necessary as the trail is quite steep in places.

Take great care when accessing Pointe de Pen Hir. The path is steep and slippery when wet. But it's also the most interesting part!

The Pointe de Pen Hir is truly magnificent. We went hiking there during the Ascension weekend in glorious weather, so there were quite a few people on some sections. But that didn't detract from the beauty of the place.
