From Boussières to Busy via the Pierre de Vorges

This lovely walk will take you to Busy along pretty, undulating woodland paths to Vorges, after which the gradient reverses on the way to Busy. From there, the road surface changes. A very steep tarmac road will take you to the D083, where you’ll take a ridge path, then the Roman road and dirt tracks for the return journey. This route offers beautiful panoramic views of several spots in the Doubs Valley.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Boussières village hall.

(S/E) Head towards the church, walk past it and carry on straight on until you reach the village boundary.

(1) Join the fitness trail and follow it all the way past the houses, including the entire uphill section, until it turns left.

(2) Leave this lovely path and head straight on along a dirt track which begins a long, steady descent, at times running alongside beautiful rocky outcrops where chamois or roe deer may be frolicking or resting. You’ll soon reach the Pierre de Vorges.

(3) Cross the stream and take the clearly visible path across the meadow, then climb quickly into the woods ahead of you, taking the right-hand Fork in the road. The gradient becomes steeper in the second half of this well-graveled path. At the first houses in Vorges, the road becomes tarmac.

(4) Turn left onto Rue Gevrey and enjoy the panoramic view over the valley, taking in Thoraise Castle, the military camp and part of Besançon. A short distance further on, the path enters the forest. Follow it to the four-way crossroads.

(5) Turn right and take the stony descent, crossing the stream.

(6) Turn left onto Rue de Culot, then turn right and then left to come out next to the stadium. Continue along the Chemin de Lande and then the Chemin du Cimetière to reach the car park at the village hall. Carefully cross the departmental road at the corner of the church and follow the Chemin de l’École opposite. Head towards Busy.

(7) Turn right and take the Chemin de la Côte – which certainly lives up to its name – until you reach the junction with the D183.

(8) Please note: you’ll need to walk alongside this busy road for 250 metres before quickly turning into the woods.

(9) Follow this path for several kilometres. You can also follow the path that runs along the ridge, which offers some lovely views. It is narrower and slightly less well-marked but much more scenic than the forest track. You’ll reach a beautiful fir forest, which you cross. You’ll arrive at the Vorges Monument.

(10) Take the path on the right, which descends very steeply through the meadows, and join the stony track on the left. Follow the Roman road until the first junction with a road coming in from the right.

(11) Then turn sharply to your right, following theGR®59marked in red and white. Pass a farm on your left and continue through the woods to reach the hamlet of Champ Mougin.

(12) Turn left, following the red and whiteGR® signposts. A little further on, turn right and begin the descent back down to Boussières. After passing through the industrial estate, head up the path at the foot of the vineyards, then turn left onto Rue des Résistants. Follow the D105 to the right and walk back up through the village to the car park where you started (S/E).

suggested corrections
Follow Rue de l’Église alongside the church until you reach the fitness trail
Take the fitness trail or the path running alongside it on the left
but take this path ‘when the fitness trail branches off to the right’
…..
Cross the pine forest and leave the ridge path at a hunting shelter, heading down towards the meadows where the Vorges monument is located

Overall, the walk is pleasant with lovely woodland, but it’s not particularly interesting (there are few, if any, views).
We had a few moments of uncertainty along the route, particularly at point 2 (apparently we didn’t take the intended path to get from 2 to 3) and at the clearing on the Côte, 1 km after point 9 (there were no signposts at the three-way junction and we veered too far to the right – so we reached point 10 by going down the slope of the Côte, passing in front of the inn).

On the other hand, I do think it’s a shame the cards aren’t printed – is that normal?

We spotted some chamois by the stream whilst we were having our picnic.
