Description of the walk

Departure from Boca de Joao de Afonso. We took an "aluguer" from "Ribera Grande" which took us to a small bridge over the "Ribera Cha das Pedros".

(S) Retrace your steps along the Cha dos Pedras until you reach the crossroads leading to a small hamlet.

(1) Take this path on the left, cross the hamlet and continue along the Caminho Campo de Cao.
Climb gently up through the houses, leaving them behind quickly. Follow the path through the fields until you come to a road.

(2) Take this road on the left, passing a small chapel. Continue along the road to reach the village of Ribéirao.

(3) Cross the village, staying on the main road. Reach the hamlet of Estrela, pass it and continue to the first water recovery dyke.

(4) Continue straight ahead, following the successive dykes; the road climbs slightly. At a bend, you will reach a crossroads.

(5) Turn right onto this path. Continue climbing along the dykes.
The road climbs more and more steeply in the middle of a valley. Reach the pass.

(6) Turn towards the village of Caibros to begin a steep descent with tight hairpin bends, which ends at Ribeira de Caibros.

(7) Join a road here and turn right. You will reach the village of Caibros.

(8) On leaving Caibros, follow the road downhill to Boca de Ambas (E).

Notes

Little shade on the hike
As everywhere in Santo Antao, bring plenty of water (in bottles).

When you arrive, wait for an "aluguer" to take you back to Ribera Grande. There's bound to be one coming, just be patient...

Worth a visit

Cape Verdean village.
Terraced farming in Cape Verde.
Magnificent views.
Encounter with the local population.

We did the route in the opposite direction because we were continuing on from Cha de Igrejah, which doubled the time and increased the elevation gain. We then reached Coculi by road. A very beautiful route and less crowded than other routes in the area. Thanks to the author.

A hike not to be missed on Santo Antão. All the island's special features in 3½ hours: lush vegetation, terraced crops, traditional villages, incredible views, paved downhill trail.
The description is very clear and the perfect trail leaves no doubt about the route.
In short, a beautiful, moderately difficult hike that is not to be missed and very uncrowded 🤩
