In the Vesdre Valley, from Vaux to Chaudfontaine

A lovely walk that will take you to the military cemetery and Chaudfontaine Fort, on the edge of Western-City, before passing through Chaudfontaine and its casino. To finish, you’ll discover the magnificent Hauster Park

Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the Sports Centre near Place Foguenne. The start of the route is in front of the bank.

(S/E) Head towards the roundabout and turn right onto Rue des Combattants. Take the first right, Rue Michel de Brassine (note the Municipal Administration
). Then turn left into Rue du Presbytère and see the rear of the town hall and the bell tower of the Church of Sainte-Vierge-Marie on the left. At the end, turn right into Rue de la Coopération. Go straight on and, at the end of the street, turn right.

(1) Turn immediately left into Rue du Ster and note on the left the start of the Way of the Cross leading to the Basilica. Follow Rue du Ster straight on and pass the old Curtius Mill. At a fork, take the right-hand path.

(2) Turn left and climb the steps. Before the road, take the path on the right and enter the Bois de la Grue. The path climbs through the woods, curves to the left and passes under a power line. Continue along Rue du Bois de la Grue for about twenty metres.

(3) When you reach the Western City estate, take a small path on the right. At the end, turn left onto Chemin de Lemmetrrie. At the crossroads, turn sharply right towards the military cemetery and Fort de Chaudfontaine. Note the view of Chèvremont Basilica on the right. Walk along the left-hand side of the military cemetery, where the remains of the fort’s soldiers who died in action in 1914 are laid to rest.

(4) Take the small path directly to the left of the fort entrance. Follow this path, which takes you round the fort in a clockwise direction.

(5) At the western tip of the fort, turn left and head down a path.
N.B. At the start, two paths run very close to each other; they then diverge but lead to the same destination.
At the bottom, turn left onto Rue de Lemmetrie. At the next junction (shrine), continue along the path opposite. Walk past the buildings on the right and note another shrine on the left.

(6) At the bottom of the path, turn sharply right and walk alongside the Vesdre. Take the first bridge to cross the river. At the end of the bridge, cross Avenue des Thermes safely using the pedestrian crossing on the left and take Rue de la Vieille Ferme, which is set back to the right.

(7) After about a hundred metres, in front of the farm, take the path on the right. Head towards the entrance to Bois les Dames. In the woods, at a fork, turn right. At the end of the path, continue along Rue des Belles Fontaines and go behind the church. When the street turns right, continue straight on for about a hundred metres.

(8) Then take a small path on the right. At the end, first turn left then right to reach Avenue des Thermes. Follow the avenue to the left (Sources O Rama building) and immediately turn right onto the bridge over the Vesdre. At the roundabout, head left and walk past the casino on your right. Further on, walk past a tennis court on your right, then first turn right then left to walk past other courts on your left.

(9) At the entrance to Hauster Park (Chapel of the Holy Family on the right), cross a small branch of the Vesdre to the left. Turn immediately right and follow the river. Then turn left and walk around the park, keeping the Vesdre on your left.

At the end of the park, turn right onto Rue Hauster and immediately ignore a turning on the right. Go under the railway line. At the next junction, veer left and then ignore Rue Curtius on the left. Continue along Rue de la Casmaterie.

(2) Go straight on along Rue de Ster (the same road as on the way out).

(1) At the end, turn left onto Rue Namont. At the end, turn right onto the N621 and return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

The first part of the route is quite strenuous. From the Vesdre valley, you climb up to Chaudfontaine Fort.
It is advisable to do this route in dry weather as the Bois de la Grue path is narrow and rocky.

A walk on a lovely spring's day. Interesting and varied.
Be careful after point 5 where the descent begins; luckily I’d downloaded the route and, using the GPS, I was able to quickly get back on track.
Thank you for a lovely morning.

A wonderful walk, taking in a variety of points of interest: the cemetery, the fort… etc.

Please note: it is impossible to cross the bridge (due to roadworks) between points 6 and 7. Instead of turning right at the hairpin bend and following the water’s edge, you must continue to the left, cross the bridge and rejoin the route a little further on.

A lovely walk.
The section around the castle and the descent are lovely. The park at the end of the route has some magnificent trees.

A lovely walk through villages, woods, along streams, through a park and past several points of interest such as the cemetery and the fort, the Chaudfontaine factory, the springs… and even Western City.

Take care at stage 2: you must turn immediately right after the stairs (a few steps) and take the path that climbs into the woods. Do not wait until you reach the road (‘Before the road’ in the text), otherwise you will miss the path.
