Croix de Ternant from Orcines village

Starting from the village of Orcines, this circular route first passes by the Pariou solidified lava flow before climbing up to the plateau for a view of the Croix de Ternant site. The return trip is via the Chemins des Gouris, once used by shepherds to travel from the farms of Fontaine du Berger to the summer pastures at the foot of the Dôme.

Description of the walk

In the village of Orcines, park in the car park opposite the community centre on Rue de la Liberté.

Yellow disc markings

(S/E) Leave the community centre on your left and turn left at the crossroads. Just before the Carrefour Express, turn right onto a path (Chemin du Chancet). Shortly afterwards, take care to turn left onto a path through the woods (the path continues straight ahead). When you reach a street, follow it to the left and, at the next intersection, keep left again. At the stop sign, continue left and you will come to the D941.

(1) Cross it carefully at the pedestrian crossing and continue along the street opposite. Before reaching a street, turn right onto a path. When you reach a path, follow it to the right and then pass to the right of a water catchment. Ignore a path on the left and continue to a street. Follow it to the left for barely 100 metres, then take the path on the left before the street turns, keeping to it and ignoring the side paths. You will arrive at a street in Bonnabry.

(2) Follow it to the left. At the crossroads, cross the main street, then turn right and follow Rue des Ronciers, which starts to the right of the fountain. Immediately afterwards, turn right onto Rue des Genêts. Follow this street around the bend to the right, then continue straight ahead onto Rue des Écureuils. At the bend in the street, opposite a very dilapidated house, take the path on the left, then immediately ignore the path on the right at the cross. You will reach an intersection with directional signs.

Blue markings

(3) Leave the yellow disc markings and the path on the right, and continue straight ahead towards Sarcenat. Further on, ignore a hairpin bend on the right. When you reach Sarcenat, a sign indicates the Fontaine du Merle.

(4) Make a short detour to the left to see it. On the way back, notice the roofs of a manor house opposite, the rest of which is not visible, which was the home of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Continue left to reach the centre of the hamlet. Notice a pretty cross on the left.

No signposts

At the fork in the road, turn left onto Chemin des Châtaigniers, ignoring Rue des Vernedes on the left. At the next intersection, make a short detour to the right to a fountain. Back at the crossroads, continue straight ahead, then straight ahead again at the next intersection. You will soon reach a larger road and find a yellow disc signpost.

(5) Continue straight ahead to pass to the right of the fountain and follow the street called Chemin de la Boide. Shortly afterwards, continue on the same street, ignoring the path on the right. The tarmac then disappears. Stay on this wide path, ignoring the vague side paths. Shortly after passing a farm building on your right, you will come to a four-way crossroads. Continue straight ahead (do not take the path marked with a yellow line on the right). You will arrive at the D90.

Yellow disc markings and greenPR®® markings

(6) Cross it carefully and continue on the path opposite. At the four-way crossroads, continue straight ahead. Stay on this path until you reach a car park on the edge of the D773, at the Montlachat signpost.

(7) Head towards the road, cross it and take the wooden walkway towards Croix de Ternant. Follow the path as it curves to the left.

No signposts

Take the first wooden walkway on the right to enter the meadow (see authorisation period in Practical Information). Off the trail, climb towards the rocks, reach them, then turn left and continue climbing to the top of the small hill (granite boulders and viewpoint). Then head towards Croix de Ternant and take a wooden walkway to reach the site (information panel, viewpoint).

Yellow disc markings and greenPR®® markings (in the opposite direction)

(8) At the foot of the cross, turn left onto the path between the broom bushes. At the T-junction, follow the path that climbs to the left before descending towards the road. Go back through the wooden walkway, cross the road and then the car park opposite to reach the Montlachat signpost.

No markings

(7) Turn right towards La Fontaine du Berger. At the entrance to the holiday centre, head towards the road and take the path on the left just before you reach it. You will arrive at the D941.

(9) Cross carefully and continue straight ahead into the old barracks. Cross the car park and continue along the path that extends from it. At the fork in the path, with a sign pointing straight ahead towards Col de Ceyssat, take the left-hand path (Chemin des Gouris, not signposted).

(10) At the three-way junction, take the middle path. Ignore a path on the left further on, then at the four-way intersection, continue straight ahead (passing a golf course on your left).

Yellow disc signpost

(11) At the next four-way intersection, at the corner of the golf course and at the Chemin des Gouris signpost, turn left towards La Font de l'Arbre, following the yellow disc andGR®® markings. The golf course is on your left.

Green markings

At the next intersection, at the corner of the golf course, leave the markings and turn left onto the path marked in green, with the golf course still on your left.

(12) Turn onto the first path on the right. Further on, ignore a path on the left, then two on the right, and then, about 50 metres further on, follow the path on the left.

(13) About a hundred metres after you start walking alongside a power line, make a short detour off the marked trail to the right to a calvary with three massive crosses.

(13) On your return, continue to the right. You will come to a T-junction; follow the path to the right, passing a series of old drinking troughs. You will arrive on a street in Orcines village, opposite the cemetery.

No markings

Continue straight ahead, walking alongside the cemetery on your right, to reach the rural community centre car park (S/E).

Notes

Hike of moderate difficulty, leaning towards easy, standard hiking equipment required.

Please note! The short circular loop to Croix de Ternant is only possible when the mountain pastures are not in use, i.e. depending on the weather, from around November to May. Outside this period, you will have to make a return trip via the path taken here for the descent.

Worth a visit

The start of the route, which is semi-urban, follows paths through the woods of Orcines, which are located on the solidified lava flow of Puy Pariou, a unique, chaotic terrain that was once used to cultivate small plots of land surrounded by stone walls, the remains of which can still be seen today.

Pretty fountains and traditional houses in the villages, a few beautiful bourgeois houses in Orcines bourg.

Beautiful views from the Croix de Ternant site, located on the edge of the plateau overlooking the Limagne Fault. A beautiful heathland with gorse (rare here) dotted with granite boulders.
The cross itself is certainly not worth a detour, and its transformation into a relay antenna has not improved it!

The last part of the hike takes place in the summer pastures, just at the foot of the Puy de Dôme.

Sarcenat, the birthplace of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.

Hiking with a fairly steep climb, but otherwise very pleasant in the volcanoes!
