Col des Esbéliousses from the Pont du Vieux Brec

This hike in the Grande Cayolle, which is part of the heart of the Mercantour massif, is not difficult. It offers varied landscapes ranging from forest to mountain pastures, then to the mineral world of the north face of Mont Pelat and the surrounding ridges.

Description of the walk

Park in the spaces available along the D902, near the Pont du Vieux Brec (elevation 2062) on the Grande Cayolle.

(S/E) At the foot of Vieux Brec, follow the westbound trail marked in white and red, which is part of the GR®56 and GRP® du Tour du Haut Verdon. Walk along the Ravin de la Grande Cayolle on your left.

(1) At the first intersection, keep left with the GR®. At the next fork (signpost), stay right on the GR®. Make a hairpin turn to the right and arrive at a sheepfold that marks the end of this trail.

(2) Take the path that starts on the left before the building. Cross the pastures and then walk along the forest. Reach the edge of the woods.

(3) Continue west-southwest on the path. Climb the switchbacks towards Grande Cayolle. You will reach a crossroads.

(4) Turn sharply right and leave the GR®. Climb northwards to the Col des Esbeliousses.

(5) Return in the opposite direction to the previous crossroads.

(4) Climb up to the right with the GR® towards the Petit Col du Talon. Enjoy the landscape created by the small streams and reach a plateau at an altitude of 2,485 m.

(6) Return to the previous intersection.

(4) Take the path on the right and, following the route in reverse, return to the car park on the D902 at Pont du Vieux Brec (S/E).
