Col de Trente Sous (642m) walks
The Col de Trente Sous from Saint-Paul-en-Jarez
An easy hike (reasonable distance and elevation gain) offering views of the northern slope of the Pilat Regional Nature Park, the hillsides of Jarez and the Monts du Lyonnais. Alternating meadows and groves, with a few sections on very quiet roads.
La Grande Barollière
Short circular or long circular above Saint-Chamond. A pleasant walk or bike ride for the whole family.
This path is quite busy, especially on Sunday mornings when the weather is good. Be careful if there is snow, as there may be snowdrifts near the Col de Trente Sous.
From Col de Trente Sous to Le Planil
A hike with no major climbs and beautiful views of the Col de l'Oeillon and Saint-Chamond.
Circular Chavanol loop to the Col de Trente Sous
A route on wide forest tracks through woods of Douglas firs and pines. The return trip to the Col de Trente Sous is not compulsory, but the views are worth it. Given the number of junctions, I recommend usingthe Visorando app on your smartphone.
Walks near Col de Trente Sous (642m)
Chavanay - Bourg-Argental
Eleventh stage of the Way of St James. This stage is the first in the Massif Central and crosses the Pilat Regional Nature Park. In the foothills of the Rhône Valley, it allows you to gain some altitude.
The Saint-Étienne Greenway
The Greenway allows you to travel from Bellevue to La Terrasse (or vice versa) via the hills west of Saint-Étienne. The signage is sometimes non-existent, sometimes misleading, and most often inadequate. These are all reasons for proposing this walk with a detailed description. It is possible to split it in two by stopping at Puits Couriot.
The route/description update of 16 August 2020 takes into account the new route from Bellevue.
Bourg-Argental - Les Sétoux
Twelfth stage of the Way of St James. This stage leads to the watershed between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, at the point where the last foothills of the Rhône valley meet the volcanic plateaus of the Velay. Setting off from Bourg-Argental, you will follow the Via Fluvia for several kilometres before beginning the climb to the Col du Tracol through the Taillard forest.
