Villers-le-Sec, Essernay and Les Miroudots route

An easy walk with little elevation gain, mostly in the shade of the woods. Passes by the Essernay chapel and a few beautifully restored old farmhouses. A route best enjoyed on a hot day.

Description of the walk

Parking available in front of the Foyer de Villers-le-Sec.

(S/E) Cross the Grande Rue at the pedestrian crossing and take Rue d’Essernay opposite, pass the Cité Saint-Vincent and continue to the left-hand bend.

(1) As you come out of the bend, turn right onto Rue de la Chapelle d’Essernay. Walk to the chapel.

(2) Turn right towards the Colombe stadium, walk past it and carry on straight ahead into the woods. You’ll reach a crossroads with several directions.

(3) Take the path straight ahead, ignoring those to the right and left.

(4) Turn off onto the path on the left (not shown on IGN maps), staying in the woods, and continue to the junction with the Route des Miroudots-Noroy.

(5) Cross over and take the path opposite, which runs alongside the road on the left before veering off and eventually leading onto a forest track.

(6) Turn right onto it and head towards the junction with the Route des Miroudots.

(7) Cross this road and continue straight ahead along the path. You will reach the hamlet known as Le Buisson.

(8) Turn right (the IGN map is incorrect at this point), which takes you round part of the Miroudots vineyards, and continue along the path which leaves the woods and leads into the Combe d’Essernay.

(9) Turn left and walk alongside the Bois d’Essernay. You’ll reach a three-way junction at the hamlet known as Les Bruyères.

(10) Turn right to head back up towards Villers-le-Sec, which you’ll reach via Rue du Tilleul. You’ll then arrive at the Croix du Tilleul crossroads.

(11) Keep left to join the Grande Rue. Turn right to return to the starting point in front of the Foyer de Villers-le-Sec (S/E).

An easy and very pleasant hike, mainly through woodland and close to Vesoul.

I ticked 'no' for the route, but as it had snowed previously, I think many walkers were put off by the snow, so I didn't meet anyone.
But I can confirm that the route is very pleasant and not difficult at all*
Yes, I think it must be popular in good weather.

A lovely, enjoyable walk, easy to do even with children.
I’d happily do it again, probably this winter.
Thanks to Gerliome for planning this route.
