At the eastern exit of Ambérieu-en-Bugey, after a roundabout with a locomotive, there are two parking options:
- Park on the old road near a sign detailing the walks organised by the municipality (car park used for this route).
- Another parking option is a few hundred metres further on, near an English bus. In this case, go up Rue le Reine Clotilde on your left until you reach a chapel (yellow-purple markings).
(S/E) Cross the RD1504 via a path that goes straight up towards the old village of Saint-Germain. The path winds through the old village, climbing towards the ruins of the feudal castle of Saint-Germain, passing near an old fortified house (Maison de la Barre, then a chapel).
(1) Continue left after the chapel, then right at the next crossroads.
(2) Near a water network transport station, turn right towards the Tour de Gy (private property). When you reach the tower, turn left onto a narrow path. After a few hundred metres, join theGR®59which climbs up to the right.
(3) Shortly afterwards, you can visit the ruins of Saint-Germain Castle, which are currently being excavated. Information panels explain the history of this fortress. Access is via a path that branches off to your right, either below or above the ruins.
(4) After joining theGR®59, follow it to the right to the hamlet of Les Allymes, ignoring any other paths or trails. The route is in a wooded area.
(5) Cross the hamlet heading north-east along a tarmac road (leave the road furthest to the right). TheGR®59 trailbranches off to the right after a few dozen metres towards the Château des Allymes. The path is narrower and the slope steeper. After a few hundred metres and a sharp right turn, cross the local road that climbs up to the hamlet of Bredevant.
Further up, join the path that climbs to Château des Allymes. Turn left and join it. Visit the Château Forteresse des Allymes (historical and cultural exhibitions).
(6) Descend towards the hamlet of Bredevant. Cross the hamlet straight ahead heading north between the houses (yellow-purple markings).
(7) After a few hundred metres, turn right onto a fairly steep path through a wooded area. At the top of the slope, you will come to a crossroads. Turn right (sign and yellow-purple markings). The climb continues along a gentler slope, with grass on your left (radio antennas), to reach the summit of Mont Luisandre (805 m).
There are ruins of a medieval building with some explanatory signs.
360° view: to the west: the Monts du Lyonnais and Beaujolais mountains; to the east: Mont Blanc on a clear day; to the south-east: Le Colombier and La Dent du Chat.
(8) From Mont Luisandre, return via the same route to the car park (S/E).
