Description of the walk

Parking in the centre of the village of Savonnières en Woêvre near the church.

(S/E) With your back to the church, turn right onto the D162. Pass thefirst road on the right and you will come to a fork.

(1) Turn left, pass in front of the cemetery and follow the red signposts. Go up the valley and you will come to a multi-way crossroads, after passing a wood on your right with a field on your left, at an elevation of 370 metres.

(2) Turn left and follow the edge of the woods a few metres from the edge, then reach a four-way crossroads after a sharp right-hand bend. Continue left for about 500 metres until you reach a fork on the left.

(3) Make a round trip following the direction of Pierre de Damechonne, indicated by a sign.

(3) On your return, continue left along the south-east path until you reach another multi-way junction.

(4) Turn right, south-west, leaving the Chevalet Rouge trail. You will come to a T-junction at the edge of the woods.

(5) Walk back and forth on the path opposite towards Saint-Christophe Abbey. Please note: do not enter, as this is private property. The abbey has been beautifully restored by its owners.

(5) On your return, continue to the right along the track for about 300 metres until you reach a path perpendicular to the left.

(6) Head left, north-east, up this straight path and at the next fork, turn left to reach the multiple crossroads you passed on the way there.

(4) Turn right, following the red signposts. At the next crossroads, turn left until you reach a T-junction.

(7) Turn left and walk to the German Altar.

(8) German Altar erected during the Great War. Turn around.

(7) Continue straight ahead, following the red signposts. Cross a track and then the D162 to reach a crossroads (there is a picnic table not far off the trail towards the D162).

(9) Turn right and reach a T-junction just before the road.

(10) Take the path on the left that runs parallel to this road, marked in green, and continue straight on to the Bockhaus from the First World War.

(11) Continue along theGRP® Val de Meuse and enter the village of Woinville.

(12) Turn left onto Chemin du Haldat du Lys, marked in yellow/red, walk past the town hall, then continue straight ahead until you reach a crossroads with an access road to Buxerulles on the right and a path on the left.

(13) Leave theGRP® and take this path on the left which climbs steeply (watch out for fallen trees). At thefirst fork, turn right and join a cross-country track on the plateau.

(14) Turn left and, after about 100 metres, turn right to reach the German monument indicated by signs and marked with a red horse.

(15) Turn around and return to the fork at the end of the track from the Buxerulles access point.

(14) Continue straight ahead. At the fork, continue straight ahead for about 80 metres.

Very beautiful hike, unfortunately some paths have been damaged by forestry machinery.
At the car park, there is an old little church open to the public that can be visited (very pretty, with a small booklet explaining the land and the church).

A beautiful hike through a forest which, unfortunately for me today, was along paths completely ruined by forestry work and rain.
In short, as you can imagine, it's better to hike in dry weather...

Beautiful scenery, varied paths, historical interest. I changed the end of the route to avoid forest paths that had been destroyed by rather heavy machinery.

Hello
We enjoyed this lovely route very much and found it very interesting. Well done!
Just one thing: on the second pass through point 4, you quickly come to a first crossroads where you have to continue straight ahead towards the red easel. It is easy to turn left too soon.
You need to be very careful if you're hiking without a GPS, as going back and forth and passing the same place several times can be confusing.
PLEASE NOTE: the picnic table near point 7 no longer exists. We searched for it in vain, but forestry work must have removed it. We took a detour from point 10 to reach another lovely shaded spot.
At point 13, after the hardest part of the climb, we did indeed encounter trees across the path. It is best not to venture there and to take the small steep path on the right, which continues along a small trail that will take you a little further to the left on the track at point 14. Then follow the description again.
Thank you again for this lovely route.

done recently and on other occasions before this route was online.
A peaceful place where you are more likely to encounter wildlife than people.
