Oudon route via La Pilardière and the Hâvre valley

This is a very pretty route in the Oudonnaise countryside, featuring the Pilardière communal estate and the Hâvre valley. The route consists almost entirely of paths and trails, with very little tarmac. It is accessible in all weathers, except along the banks of the Hâvre during periods of high water. Many sections are tree-lined, making it particularly pleasant in hot weather. Depending on the season, you may be able to admire magnificent carpets of cyclamen at the foot of the trees on the Pilardière estate.

Description of the walk

Salle des Moissons car park, 336 Rue de la Loire.

(S/E) Head south-east to pass in front of the Salle des Moissons. At the end of this small road, turn left towards the lake, which you will go around on the right. Continue to the children's playground, which you will pass. After the lifeguard building, turn right and leave the grounds to join the road called Chemin du Rio.

(1) Cross at the pedestrian crossing, then take the path opposite. After about 100 metres, take the road on the right. Ignore the sandy path that goes up to the left, then immediately take the small path opposite, parallel to the entrance to the Écuries de la Tour.

(2) At the next intersection of two small paths, take the left-hand path uphill. Leave the woods and continue along a path bordered by two meadows. At the end of the path, you will come to a road (D323). Follow the parallel lane on the right for about 30 metres.

(3) Cross the road carefully and continue along the path opposite, approaching the D723, Route de Paris à Paimbœuf. Just before you reach it, you will come to an intersection.

(4) Go straight ahead to pass through the tunnel under the D723, then turn left and follow the road. At the entrance to a wooded area, turn right. Near the houses on your right, cross a gravel path and continue straight ahead. After 20 metres, turn right. Cross another path and continue towards the Pilardière manor house.

(5) Just before the manor house, turn right towards the outbuildings. Take the stairs on the right, then turn left at the top. Just before the property's boundary wall, turn left: you will then be heading back towards the main building. About 20 metres before you reach it, turn right. Do not go through the wooden gate at the end of the path, but turn left just before it and follow the road. At the next intersection of small paths, take the one on the right. Further on, ignore the path on the left, which you took at the start of the circular route, continue straight ahead and go back through the tunnel.

(4) At the exit, climb the stairs to the edge of a field. Follow the D723 again, but on the other side. At the end of the field, take the path on the right. When you reach the bus shelter and houses, turn slightly left and then immediately right to enter Impasse des Châtaigniers. Walk along the right-hand side of houses nos. 83 and 93, then go down the steps on the right to reach Route de Couffe.

(6) Cross it carefully and take the small path opposite. This descends steeply and leads you to the banks of the Hâvre. Then turn right: you are now on the Promenade et Randonnée (PR®) path, marked in yellow, which runs alongside the river.

(7) At an intersection, ignore the path that climbs to the right and stay close to the river. Pass under the D723 bridge, and further on, ignore another path on the right.

(8) If you wish to stay on flat ground, continue straight ahead to the footbridge over the Hâvre (PR® signposting, arrival at 3.7 km). Otherwise, for a slightly more challenging route, turn right (choice of route). Once you reach the road, turn left: you will see a footbridge.

(9) Cross it, then immediately turn right, following the river as closely as possible. At the end of the field, continue to the right, then quickly take the path on the left. Follow the yellow markings to the village of Oudon, parallel to the Hâvre. Pass under the D723 bridge and arrive at the road bridge.

(10) Normally, the path continues under the road bridge, allowing access to the village footbridge about 50 metres away, to reach the left bank of the Hâvre. However, as this footbridge is currently damaged by flooding, you must take the stone staircase just before the road bridge, cross it, then immediately turn right onto another stone staircase. Follow the path for about 150 metres, cut left along the gardens, then cross the Parking de la Vallée car park to its end.

(11) Take the concrete path on the right, which bends to the left and quickly leads to a tarmac road. Cross at the pedestrian crossing, then turn right onto the sandy path to leave the road. Turn left and follow the lane to the road, going around the small dirt car park. Turn left and, at the roundabout, turn right to reach the Salle des Moissons car park (S/E).

A magnificent route through the countryside with very little tarmac: lovely wooded paths, the enchanting setting of the Domaine de la Pilardière with its superb, remarkable trees, and the sun-drenched Hâvre Valley, bathed in total tranquillity and unspoilt nature. The walk is generally easy, except for the second part of the Hâvre Valley, which is a bit more ‘challenging’ with a steep path and a significant climb (don’t forget to wear good walking shoes). The route is very easy to follow.
I’m going to suggest this walk to my walking club very soon.

A lovely walk. The Pilardière is a stunning spot. The walk around Le Havre is charming. No difficulty if you’re wearing proper walking boots. The guide was reliable.

A beautiful, varied route with magnificent woodland and, as the icing on the cake, carpets of cyclamen in the Pilardière estate, where we got a little lost among the many paths.
We did the whole route in dry weather, but after heavy rain we imagine it would be difficult to walk along the Hâvre valley.
A hike that we would recommend and do again in spring in dry weather.

This hike is very interesting and the route is not particularly difficult. The route description is very clear, except at the beginning where it is not easy to find the tunnel under the D 723.

A beautiful, well-designed route, no tarmac, pleasant paths through the woods. In the unmarked section, you just need to pay attention to the map; the Visorando app is perfect for this. The marked section, along Le Havre, was busier (we did the walk on a Sunday). Make sure you wear good shoes as some sections can be a little slippery if it has rained recently. A hike we will do again.
