Description of the walk

From Ancenis, take the D763 towards Vallet. Leave it at Liré and take the D751 to Orée d'Anjou. Park in the tourist office car park.

(S/E) Take the path to the left of the tourist office and walk alongside the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine Church, which will be on your left. Join Rue Hippolyte Maindron.

(1) Turn right, then follow the path next to the Champtoceaux town hall annex before crossing the street at the pedestrian crossing. You will arrive at the ruins of the citadel.

(2) Turn right onto Chemin du Port Neuf, walk past the cemetery and, at the end of this road, cross the D751 with caution.

(3) Take the path opposite and follow it for 150 metres before turning left onto Sentier Orée d'Anjou. Pass Moulin Pendu.

(4) Pass through the Photofolies exhibition car park, then turn right at the Ginguette les Folies d'Orée. Arrive at the D751C bridge.

(5) Pass under the D751C and first turn left then right, then continue straight ahead (ignore the paths that go to the right or left). Continue until you reach a sharp bend that branches off to the left. Continue straight ahead when you reach the path and pass a lake called La Bridonnière on your right. You will come to a crossroads shortly after the lake.

(6) Immediately turn left and walk along the Boire de la Bridonnière for just under 300 metres until you reach the Basse Jagottière (next building). Turn right and walk through the vineyards to reach the D751.

(7) Cross the road carefully to reach the other side and first turn right then left. Continue straight ahead on the road until it turns into a track. Then, at the end of the track, turn left. At the T-junction, turn left and follow this path for 200 metres, then turn left again until you reach La Gourdonnière. At the hamlet, take the first left, then take the first right and continue for about 600 m, keeping in the same direction. Ignore a path on the left and continue to a second crossroads (Chemin du Voinard).

(8) Turn right. Keep left twice to cross Rue Jean V and take Rue du Petit Saint-Jean opposite. At the end, continue straight on Rue du Champ de Bataille, then take the first left. The path passes between the houses. At the end, turn right to join a narrow street, then Avenue d'Anjou.

(9) Continue straight ahead on Rue de la Gagnerie and, at the end of the street, continue on the path, then turn right for 60 metres and turn left. Continue to the T-junction to reach Route du Haut Quartron.

(10) Turn left towards the historic mill. Ignore the first crossroads and continue to the second, turn left and follow the road to the D751.

(11) At this intersection, cross carefully and continue along this path, keeping to the left. Follow theGR®3, which offers beautiful views along the Patache. Continue past this village to reach a crossroads and its panoramic view.

(12) Turn left to return to the D751. Turn right and go around the skatepark and swimming pool. Continue along the heights of Champalud, where you can admire the view, then return to the Champalud car park, keeping to the left (S/E).

Worth a visit

(2) Remains of the Citadel: an ancient fortified town, the Citadel of Châteauceaux was destroyed in 1420 by Jean V, Duke of Brittany. All that remains are the two entrance towers and the ruins of the old stronghold. At the time, the citadel was 2.5 times the size of the citadel of Carcassonne.

(4) Moulin Pendu: listed as a historic monument, this 13th- and 14th-century building was for some time mistakenly identified as a river toll booth. It is in fact a watermill. Under the ogival trees hung paddle wheels that drove the millstones upstairs. These wheels were adjustable according to the level of the Loire, hence the name "hanging mill".

(11)Banks of the Loire GR°°®°°3 (village of La Patache): formerly known as "Port-Hamelin", this small village of fishermen and sailors is now called "La Patache", named after the old disused boat that was moored there and used as a customs office for monitoring the river and transporting goods.

(12) Panorama of Champaludeaux: An exceptional listed site overlooking the Loire from a height of 70 metres above Champtoceaux.

A very interesting hike with beautiful views of the Loire. Good hiking boots are essential during the winter months (muddy and slippery sections).

A very beautiful hike, not very busy at this time of year.
The blue markings, which are very easy to follow, have clearly been redone and complement the hike description well.
We encountered a difficulty between points 11 and 12: the GR3, shortly before La Patache, was cut off. The footbridges that allow you to bypass a rocky outcrop have been washed away by high water. Walking over the rocks presents a high risk of catastrophic slipping. It is better to stay on the tarmac road to reach La Patache while waiting for repairs.

A beautiful hike with a rich heritage. A few difficult but interesting sections. Beautiful scenery. Some arrows are hidden by vegetation, particularly between points 6 and 7, and the path that climbs to the right is very difficult to see.

A very varied route between the banks of the Loire, the vineyard slopes and the streets of Champtoceaux. We encountered some difficulties following the Loire, which had overflowed onto the path in early May 2024. We found alternative routes by climbing a little higher up the slopes or through the pastures.

Superb hike. Note that it is difficult to rely solely on the description. A map is essential!
There are a few fairly steep descents and ascents, but the variety of landscapes and panoramic views are not to be missed.

Overall, it's a beautiful hike, especially since there's so much to see in terms of culture and heritage. The view is exceptional. The Loire is at our feet.
Regarding the route:
Start at point 4: interesting - you pass the last two towers dating from the citadel + the suspended mill.
Points 4 to 6 Cycle path. There were lots of cyclists on the day we went.
From point 6 to 7. The path is barely visible when you have to climb up a beautiful shaded path.
Points 7 to 8. We cross vineyards, then a pleasant wood.
Points 8 to 10. We take paved roads (lots of them). This spoils the appeal of this hike.
Points 10 to 11. Pleasant path, but nothing more.
Points 11 to 12. You take the GR 3. Well marked. Very beautiful and safe section.
Point 12 to the starting point. We climb back up to the village via a path with wide, comfortable steps, but the elevation gain is significant.
Markings: Blue, in principle, but absent on certain sections, particularly where the route changes direction. A GPS and a 1:25,000 IGN map are very useful.
To avoid the section from point 8 to 10, you can pass further south of the village.
This route does not allow us to see the ruins of the citadels. What a shame! (Or you can turn back at point 8 and descend to the left).
