Ridge path in the Gennargentu, starting from the Tascusi Pass

A circular walk via Bruncu Sa Runge/Monte Iscudu, offering magnificent views of the Gennargentu massif and the village of Desulo. The walk is poorly signposted but not particularly difficult, especially if you stick to the return journey along the ridge path: there are a few scattered orange and yellow markings. The route offers a circular route through the forest, but we could instead have extended it towards Mount Bruncu Spina. Expect some amusing encounters with free-roaming farm animals!

Description of the walk

Start from the Col de Tascusi car park, next to the Madonna delle Nevi restaurant: do not park in the restaurant car park, which is reserved for customers, but in the one slightly further down the hill.

(S/E) Walk up the road past the restaurant and follow the picnic tables on the left.

(1) Leave the road and take the dirt track marked by a broken red and white sign. You’ll soon reach a junction.

(2) Carry on straight ahead until you reach a viewpoint overlooking the lake.

(3) Turn right at the hairpin bend and continue uphill to the ridge path, which is not very well defined.

(4) Pass the metal structure at Bruncu Sa Ruge/Monte Iscudu and carry on along the path.

(5) Look out for the start of the alternative return route on the right and head straight on to the mast.

(6) Return to the ridge path (a few yellow and orange markings) as far as the cross.

(7) Turn back.

(5) Turn left towards the forest: this section is unmarked. Then follow the edge of the forest down the contour lines until you reach an entrance to the undergrowth.

(8) Turn right to follow the narrow path until it joins a forest track at a hairpin bend. Follow the track, turning left.

(9) Pass a small spring and continue along the forest track until you reach a junction with an electricity pylon.

(10) Take the path leading down to the right and return to the starting point.

(2) Turn left and head straight back to the car park (S/E).

Hike completed in January with no snow.
The ridge path offers little shelter: make sure you wrap up warm, as you’ll be exposed to the wind.
There are no drinking water points or shelters along the route.

A lovely walk, but I should have read the comments: in September, just like in June, we really scratched our legs on the ‘unmarked’ section, which was right in the middle of some really dense scrub! And we were wearing shorts, of course – ouch.
And at the end on the track – given that they’re logging the forest – the track has been widened; there’s little shade because of the felling, and it’s full of dust. We really should have done it as a return walk. And perhaps the scenery is prettier in spring?
As for the animals, we literally came across them right on the road as we arrived: cows, calves, pigs! Then, at the start of the walk, there were sheep and goats roaming freely. It was good fun.

A lovely walk, particularly the view over the village of Desulu; however, on the way back, I wouldn’t recommend taking the unmarked path down (at point 5); we scratched our legs in the thick undergrowth; the track leading back to the road runs through pine trees in a logging area and is very dusty; this section is of no interest, it is better to continue along the ridges as on the way out.
