Description of the walk

Park in the small car park by the side of the D53 (Route de Montalba).

(S/E) Walk up the tarmac road to the junction leading to the fort.

(1) Turn left onto the footpath, passing the Fontaine de la Madona. A few metres further on, follow the sign for ‘Chapelle Santa Engràcia’ (signpost) by turning right and rejoining the D53. Cross the road carefully to rejoin the footpath opposite, slightly to the right (signpost).

(2) Continue climbing the path, turning right at the hairpin bend. You’ll reach the end of a gravel track.

(3) Ignore it and continue to follow the path on the right, which climbs steadily. Admire the beautiful sculpture at the hairpin bend to the left and carry on for about fifty metres.

(4) Turn right, then keep left at the junction just ahead.

(5) Continue along the path to the right and head for the Santa Engràcia Chapel: there is a visitors’ book inside. “Do take the opportunity to admire the view from the orientation table.”

(6) Turn round and follow the same route back in the opposite direction to return to the car park (S/E).

Pleasant hike; steady effort on stony paths; the Madonna fountain is dry, which is a shame

A pleasant, partly shaded walk. A continuous and fairly steep climb up to the chapel. There’s a lovely view to be had right on the outskirts of Amélie-les-Bains.
