Montalba d'Amélie and the Engracia Chapel from Amélie-les-Bains

This hike takes place in the woods, but offers beautiful views of the Vallespir (Roc Saint-Sauveur) and Canigou. Avoid when it is too hot.

Description of the walk

Parking at the entrance to Amélie, opposite the Tourist Office, Avenue du 8 mai 1945.

(S/E) From the car park (altitude 215 m), turn left onto the avenue and continue to the roundabout. Opposite, take Rue Cami del Pastou, which climbs uphill, and continue to the gate at the start of a marked trail (blue + yellow), signposted Drapeau de Montalba - Roc de France.

(1) Take this path on the right and follow it to an altitude of 450m.

(2) Leave the trail that branches off to the left (towards Roc de France) and turn right (Roc de la Campana) for a 10-minute round trip to Roc de la Campana (view of the Mondony Gorges). There is a superb snow well on this trail.

(3) Return to the crossroads. Turn right (wooden sign for Montalba), blue markings (south-east direction).

(4) When you reach the D53 road (405m), turn left onto the road that climbs uphill and follow it for 2.5km to Montalbà (543m).
Before arriving, at the bridge over the Mondony stream, you can see the ruins of an old stone bridge below.

(5) In Montalbà, take the grassy track opposite that descends towards "Pont de Riubanys -PR®1" (blue markings, south-west direction). This path descends towards the Montdony river and follows it until it joins the D53 road (376 m).

(6) Turn left, cross the bridge and walk along the road for 1.2 km. Pass the Salt de l'Aigua waterfall and the fountain.

(7) About 250m further on, leave the road at Correc del Clot del Truc (altitude 410m) and turn left onto the blue-marked trail "Chapelle Santa Engràcia-Sportif".
This path climbs steeply, especially at the start. Leave the "Ruine Mas Can Mascaro et Mas Montagut" junction on your left and continue climbing (altitude 510 m).

(8) At the next fork (altitude 590 m), there are no signs: you can go up to the right or left. Follow the path on the left, which is much longer and climbs more slowly, but takes you past the spring. Just follow the various signs for "chapelle" (chapel).
Reach the Santa Engracià Chapel (653m): information signs on the site and a magnificent place in very good condition.

(9) Return to the information signs and take the path opposite, marked in yellow, heading west-north-west.

(10) At the Place Julio crossroads, turn right towards the cross. Leave the yellow markings and follow the blue ones. At the cross (altitude 657m, superb view of Canigou), take the steep path on the right which leads back to the wide yellow-marked path (altitude 560m). Turn right and continue downhill.

(11) A little further down (altitude 550 m), leave this wide path at a hairpin bend that joins the track and take the path opposite (marked yellow and blue, heading west then turning north) to continue the descent.

(12) At the next junction (altitude 450m), leave the yellow-marked trail that branches off to the left and take the trail on the right (marked blue, yellow cross, heading northwest). This path descends until it joins the D53 road. At the road, turn right and follow it for 150m: two blue crosses and blue triangles on the ground indicate the direction.

(13) At the bend in the road to the right, leave the road and take the path that descends to the left, signposted Les Thermes (blue markings, heading north). The path descends in a zigzag pattern. At an altitude of 280m, there is a fork in the path. Take the right-hand path to reach Les Thermes d'Amélie. When you reach Place du 25è Léger, take the stairs on the left to reach Place Arago. Head towards the town centre, Rue des Thermes. At the end, turn right onto Avenue du Vallespir, then take the second left onto Avenue Docteur Bouix. Before the bridge over the Tech, turn right to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Car park at the entrance to Amélie, free at weekends and on public holidays, otherwise £2.50 per day.
Hike on marked trails.
According to the altimeter, the calculated elevation gain is 850 metres.

There are many hiking trails starting from Montalba, notably towards Roc Saint-Sauveur and Roc de France.

Variations:
- It is possible to shorten the hike by going from point (4) to point (6). To do this, instead of taking the D53 which climbs to the left, descend to the right.
- At (8), you can climb to the right. The path is much shorter and, of course, steeper. Once you reach the chapel, you can always return to the source.

Worth a visit

One of my most beautiful hikes. Done on a beautiful winter day after a period of heavy rain and snow. Water in abundance in the waterfalls and streams. I had to take off my shoes to cross the Mondony. Beautiful panoramas, well-marked paths. The climb to the chapel is quite steep and seems tiring, as it comes late in the route. All the peaks were snow-capped. I highly recommend it.

A very pleasant hike, we had beautiful weather. It was a bit windy on the climb up to the Santa Engracia chapel, but it was worth it, the place is magnificent.
I highly recommend this hike, which is accessible to everyone. Make sure you wear good footwear and consider bringing walking sticks.
I'd do it again 😃

Beautiful hike, two slightly steep sections but nothing difficult. Covered 15.7 km and only 770 m of elevation gain on my smartphone, in 8 hours including stops, as I am 71 years old and stopped to pick chestnuts. The section on the D53 road is a bit long; likewise, there was no snow pit and I didn't see the ruins of the Roman bridge. I regret that a certain "Anne-Elise" puts the same advertisement on all the hikes in the area, which is very unpleasant. Readers, please protest if you stop at the "Amélia" campsite in Amélie-les-Bains!

Hello,

This hike offers beautiful views of Vallespir. As we like to stop at campsites after our hikes, my partner and I stopped at the Amélia campsite in Amélie Les Bains. They offer an inexpensive package for hikers, which allows you to pitch your tent on a pitch and use the sanitary facilities.

A magnificent hike, very well explained.
70% of the route is through woodland, which is very pleasant, even in hot weather like today (05/07, 33°C).
This hike offers magnificent views.
There are two fountains along the route (the water is drinkable according to locals): one in Montalba and the other at the Salt de l'Aigua waterfall.
According to my watch, it's more like 15 km and 800 m of elevation gain.

The view is superb from the flag overlooking Amélie les Bains. The snow patches are not very visible, but we eventually found them.
From up high, you can see the snow-capped Canigou. The route is pretty and not very crowded, except on the way back from the Engracia chapel, which has been nicely renovated and has an adorable nativity scene inside.

The beginning, up to the Roc de France / Roc de la Campana junction, is very physically demanding. However, I couldn't find the snow wells, and the ruins of the Roman bridge are hidden by vegetation.
The beautiful views and peaceful surroundings allowed me to do a good part of the hike naked.
