Saint-Jean Chapel in the Dieulefit-Bourdeaux region

At the start of the circular route, the Soubrion river must be crossed by fording (the only authorised crossing point). However, if the water level does not allow for a safe crossing, the landowners permit use of their footbridge. Please respect this exception.

Description of the walk

From Bourdeaux, head towards Nyons. The start point is at the junction with the Route des Tonils.

(S/E) From the car park at the Pont de Soubrion signpost, walk 500m along Route des Tonils (D195) towards the north-east and take the first path on the right.

(1) Ford the Soubrion river, pass beneath the Siraillot house, then turn left in front of the large rock. Continue along the path which branches off to the right and enters the woodland. Climb up to a small ridge, then continue along the path that winds its way through the conifers. Then turn left onto a wide path to reach Les Servins, pass in front of the house and reach the D330.

(2) Take the road to the right and, after more than 500m, pass in front of a large farm building. At thesecond bend, leave the road and head right onto the open area, then take the path to the left below.

(3) Walk past the Le Pérouty signpost and continue towards the Chapelle Saint-Jean.

(4) Cross the small stream and head up the slope opposite; after about 100m, take the path on the left. Join the tarmac road, follow it to the left and, at the next junction, turn right after the house.
Admire the Chapelle Saint-Jean, an11th-century Romanesque church, on your right.

(5) At the chapel, head down to the right onto the road and, immediately afterwards, take the path on the right. Go through a gate (please close it behind you) to cross a pasture. Continue over the marl and through the boxwood before reaching the ridge.

(6) Reach the D70 and turn right onto it. Continue (with caution) to reach the starting point shortly afterwards (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Chapel of Saint-Jean
The chapel was built on a Gallo-Roman site, most likely on the ruins of an older building which has not yet been identified.
Inthe 11th century, Gontardus and his sons, lords of the Bourdeaux estates, ceded the church to the Benedictine Abbey of Savigny. Pope Paschal II confirmed this donation in writing in 1107; this is the first written record of the Church of Saint John the Baptist in Crupies (“ecclesia Cripies”). Originally dedicated to Catholicism, it was granted to the Protestant faith by a Napoleonic decree in 1806. The building, now a church, remained in use until 1904, when it was deconsecrated. The Saint-Jean Chapel was listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments in 1981.

We were 'attacked' by three Patou dogs that came out of the farm towards Le Pérouty, barking and following us very closely while we were on the D330. The most aggressive one didn't let us go until point 3 on the map. It was very frightening, but we were unharmed and angry that no one came out of the farm to call them back.
Further on, the Romanesque St-Jean chapel is pretty, but closed.

A very pleasant route for the average walker; best done when it’s not too hot or sunny.

Pretty and perfect for a winter’s afternoon. A quick note: after the chapel, and after the fence, don’t climb the small hill, but go round it to the right (there’s a barely visible path at the foot of the hill)

A lovely walk; the description and route on the map are spot on, except for the section after St Jean’s Chapel.
