Castres – Mazamet – Saint-Amans-Soult

The second stage of this route – whilst we await a proper dedicated cycle route between Castres and Mazamet – involves an attempt to link these two towns via a rather challenging route.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Boucle Albi - Castres - Mazamet - Bédarieux - Millau - Albi

Description of the route

(S) From the station forecourt, take Rue Aristide Briand opposite.

(1) At the end of the street, turn right onto Rue de Laden.

(2) At the end of the street, turn left onto the cycle path on Boulevard Mendès-France and continue straight on until you reach the roundabout.

(3) Continue left onto Avenue Lacaze Basse.

(4) At the traffic lights, turn right onto Avenue Cassin, cross the Agout and head up towards the next roundabout.

(5) Carry on to the right onto the D85, towards Labruguière. Leave the D85 at the next roundabout by continuing straight on along the D60, still heading towards Labruguière, and proceed to the next junction.

(6) Turn left onto Avenue de la Capelanié, continue for a good kilometre and turn right onto Rue Nayral a few metres before a roundabout.

(7) Turn right onto Rue Nayral, pass the municipal boiler house and join the S urban road (D800).

(8) Turn right onto the cycle path and follow it to its end at the Château du Causse. Continue on the main road, Avenue de la Montagne Noire, and cross the Causse business park.

(9) At the roundabout, turn right onto the D56, still heading towards Labruguière.

(10) At the roundabout by the supermarket, go three-quarters of the way round, then follow the Chemin Blanc. It passes under the N112 and climbs up towards the airport before turning right, then left uphill and then downhill.

(11) Ignore Bonnéry on the right and carry on straight ahead. At the next junction, turn right, crossing the small bridge, then cross the bridge over the Thoré and head towards the outskirts of Caucalières.

(12) Turn left onto the D65 to cross the village and cross the Thoré again. Stay on the D65, pass through Payrin-Augmontel and join the D612.

(13) Proceed with great caution on this very busy road. Cross the Thoré once more, pass the shopping area on your left and arrive at a junction with traffic lights.

(14) At the three-way junction, turn right towards Mazamet town centre, heading up Avenue Foch.

(15) At the level crossing, the Passapaïs cycle route starts on the left.
Cross the railway line and head towards Mazamet station on the right.

(16) This is a short detour to explore the station forecourt. You can start your ride from here if you only want to cycle along the greenway, avoiding the poorly maintained cycle route from Castres.
Then return to the start of the greenway.

(15) Follow the greenway, which runs alongside a few streets on a dedicated path and crosses the Thoré. Just after the bridge, turn left towards the roundabout at the shopping area, then turn right onto Rue de la Castagnalotte a few metres before reaching it.

(17) Take this road and, at the end of it, the greenway returns to a dedicated lane, running alongside the D612 to the south, then to the north after a safe but somewhat winding underpass. The stage ends near Saint-Amans-Soult station (E).

Notes

A winding route with plenty of uphill and downhill sections, sections of cycle path that are too short (apart from the Passapaïs greenway) and plenty of busy streets and avenues.
It is better to take the train from Castres to Mazamet (about 20 minutes).
Campsites in Labruguière, Mazamet and Saint-Amans-Soult.
