Description of the route

(S) The route starts in front of the school, heading towards the station forecourt on a tarmac section. After the car park, the tarmac quickly gives way to a stabilised cycle path.

(1) At the old Albine station, turn right onto Route de Bousqueyrac, then left along the D612 (without crossing it), then left and right along the treatment works’ ponds.

(2) You’ll pass the old Lacabarède railway station.

(3) Near the Freyssinet fertiliser factories, turn right onto the road that descends and splits the factory in two.

(4) At the lowest point after crossing the Thoré, turn left onto a short, steep climb. The track overlooks the Thoré and follows the original route of the old railway line after a right-hand bend. Cross the Thoré twice via a viaduct and go through the first tunnel before reaching the heights of Labastide-Rouairoux.
Continue along the track on the hills above the village and climb a gentle gradient (1.5 per cent) through the woodland to the entrance to the Fenille tunnel

(5) Pass through the lit, tarmac-surfaced tunnel and, upon exiting, begin the descent towards Courniou

(6) Pass the old railway station and the visitor centre for the Grotte de la Devèze (also known as the ‘glass spinner’ cave). Continue towards Saint-Pons.

(7) Do not cross the D612 but take the hairpin bend down the farm track beneath the county road and rejoin the track on the other side, running alongside the road.
Go through two tunnels, then an underpass, and emerge near the old railway station where there are picnic tables in the shade of the trees (E).

Notes

Most villages have local shops (bakeries, mini-markets) where you can stock up on supplies.
There are no water points along the route, unless you go into the cemeteries.

The tunnels are lit and safe, with an asphalt surface. Bring a head torch and an extra layer of clothing as a precaution to avoid getting chilled, at least in the Fenille Tunnel, which is over 700 metres long.

Worth a visit

Textile Museum in Labastide.
The Fileuse de Verre Cave in Courniou.
The Source du Jaur and the Museum of Prehistory in Saint-Pons.
