Devèz waterfall and Puech du Roussillon

Circular to discover the beautiful Devèz Waterfall, with a first part through the forest and a second part on the beautiful summer pastures of Puech du Roussillon. Lots of streams in the forest and beautiful views from the summer pastures.

Description of the walk

From the D900, just before reaching Curières from the south, take the D164 towards Forêt du Dévèz. Drive for about 6 km, then look for a track on the left with a wide enough entrance to park your vehicle. On the left side of the road, there is a yellow sign indicating "Retour cascade" (waterfall return), which can be used as a landmark.

No signposts

(S/E) Follow the track, which soon makes a first turn to the right. About 200 m further on, just before a clearing, look out for a yellow arrow on the left side of the path. Take a barely visible passage just behind this arrow to quickly reach a path. Follow it to the left. At first, it is a little overgrown with broom, then further on, a little overgrown with young trees, but it is still very passable (in 2024).

(1) At a hairpin bend to the right, ignore a vague opening on the left. The path is now completely clear. It approaches a beautiful stream, the Dourtigouse, then moves away from it.

(2) About 50 metres after a clearing, at a fork in the path, at a yellow arrow pointing to the right, turn left. The path makes a hairpin bend to the left and leads to an intersection, at a yellow arrow pointing in the opposite direction.

(3) Continue straight ahead and arrive at the beautiful Dourtigouse waterfall, just upstream from the Devèz waterfall, which is still invisible just downstream. Continue along the path, ignoring a track further on that climbs sharply to the left, and you will soon arrive at a clearing with directional signs that provide little information for this description.

Yellow markings

(4) For a round trip, turn right towards the Devèz waterfall and head to the developed site at the bottom of the waterfall.

(5) Retrace your steps to the intersection.

No markings

(4) Continue straight ahead.

(6) At a fork in the path, turn right for a short round trip to the Menepeyre stream. At the next fork, keep right and reach the edge of the stream. Retrace your steps, keeping left at the intersection.

(6) Continue right on the path.

GRP®® Red and Yellow Markings

At the intersection shortly after, ignore the path on the right. Now follow theGRP®® Tour des Monts d'Aubrac markings.

(7) At the Le Devèz signpost intersection, continue straight ahead towards Laguiole. Further on, ignore a path on the left. When you reach a track, follow it to the left and join the D164 (alternative car park).

(8) Continue straight ahead, still on the GRP®®.

(9) At a clearing, be careful at a fork in the road and follow the right-hand path (which seems less obvious due to forestry work (2024), but the markings are present further on; the IGN map is inaccurate).

(10) Further on, enter the Puech du Roussillon mountain pastures and pass through several passages between the plots. Leave this first area of meadows, cross a wood, then walk again across a vast meadow. Arrive at the exit of the meadow.

Yellow markings

(11) Please note: do not take this passage: leave theGRP®® markings and turn left along the meadow fence, noting the yellow markings to follow from now on. Further on, a more rustic passage allows you to exit the meadow. Continue on the path (inaccurate on the IGN map) which joins a track at the ruins of burons. Follow it to the left to reach the D164 and the car park
(S/E).

Beautiful autumn walk in the woods
No particular difficulty
Accurate description (with GPS track), at the very start of the walk, the path that branches off to the left downhill is not easy to spot
Absolutely no one there that day

A very beautiful hike, almost entirely through forest, magnificent beech woods, ideal in summer. The waterfall area is very beautiful and refreshing. Cross beautiful meadows full of gentians and hills towards the cross-country ski trails. Time flies by, there are no difficulties, and the elevation gain in the second part is gentle. Read the description carefully, as the few points to note are clearly marked. GPS if needed.

A very pleasant hike with a beautiful variety of topography and landscapes. The detour to the waterfall is a very enjoyable part of the walk, but so is the walk through the magnificent beech forests, particularly on the plateau. This route avoids the monotony of some walks in the Aubrac and is recommended in hot weather.

A very beautiful route, mostly shaded by beautiful forests. The waterfall is spectacular, but the numerous streams that you follow or cross are also welcome. The points of interest are perfectly described, but a GPS is necessary as the trail is sometimes poorly marked. We didn't encounter any other hikers except near the waterfall. We chose this Devèz waterfall route, which had just been published and was supposedly less frequented, and this was confirmed once we got there. All the more reason to take this beautiful hike, which presents no difficulty.
Thank you.
